Paul and Annie Sutton Ferguson

By Marsha Graham Strader

The earliest official record for Paul Ferguson that has been found by this researcher is an entry in the “Roster of South Carolina Patriots” which states “Ferguson, Paul.   He enlisted in the Sixth Regiment on 1 April 1776.  N.A.853”.  There is a record of a pay stub for 1000 days of service to the state troops on file in the Chester County Historical Society.  It is dated April 1, 1781.   Interestingly, the next stub submitted was that of Robert Ferguson so they apparently submitted their stubs for reimbursement at the same time.  In the 1778  South Carolina Early Census Index, he is listed as living in the Camden District.   Court Records in Chester County, SC, also show the following entries:

·         Book C - page 308,  19 January 1785

Between Agnes Hannah of 96 District SC (a spinster) and Paul Ferguson, Camden District, 200 acres in Craven County on the banks of a branch of Rocky Creek bounded Eastward by two tracts of land belonging to James McClure and others--NW by Elizabeth White's land other side vacant land

·         Deed Book D. page 381

11 May 1795  Between Paul Ferguson Senior and Anne his wife--and Paul Ferguson Jr.   For one hundred pound (sterling) by Paul Ferguson Jr. for 100 acres on the waters of Sandy River on North side of Chester County originally granted to Paul Ferguson Sr. 7 August 1786

(signed) by Paul and Anne Ferguson with James Quiston and Mary Graham as witnesses.

Paul and Elizabeth Ann “Annie” Sutton Ferguson left Chester County, South Carolina, and moved to Old Logan County, KY, in 1798.  They brought several of their children, some married children followed later. and one child, Paul Ferguson, Jr. is known to have remained in Chester Co., SC.  On 20 September 1799, Paul received a 200 acre land grant on the Gasper River in Old Logan County, KY (now Butler County, KY).  In 1802, Paul built the beautiful log cabin (see picture) which still stands in Butler County, KY. Paul had fought with General Sumter during the Revolutionary War and in his pension application of 1824 he states that he was with Sumter at the Battle of Fishdam Ford.

Settlement of his estate included the following which is on file in Butler County Deed Book C, pg. 72, 30 Dec. 1824:

James Ferguson, John Ferguson, Jonathan  Ferguson, Jacob  Ferguson, Mary Ferguson, Catherine  Ferguson, & John Marrs who intermarried with Sarah  Ferguson, all heirs & representatives of PAUL FERGUSON, dec'd, of Butler County, sold to John Gaston a certain tract of land lying in Butler County on waters of Gasper River containing 100 acres.

James Graham was a witness for the sale of Paul Ferguson’s land on 3/14/1825.  James was the son of Garrett and Esther Graham which indicates a possible relationship between the two families even before James married into the Ferguson family in 1826 (see entry for Jane Ferguson below).

Newspaper Clipping from Bowling Green, KY dated Nov. 27, 1992

Paul Ferguson was born 1742 in South Carolina and died about 1824 in Dexterville, Butler County, Kentucky. He is buried near Mount Vernon Cemetery in Dexterville. Paul married Elizabeth Ann Sutton who was also born 1742 in South Carolina and died before December 20, 1824 in Butler County, Kentucky. Paul Ferguson was a Revolutionary War Vet for Craven County, North Carolina Line 2nd Regiment (note from webmaster:  see note below for contradictory information). Late in the year 1824 Paul traveled to what in now the Dexterville Community to visit fellow soldier William Beasley. Paul died while he was there and was buried near the present site of Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. His estate was settled December 30, 1824. Originally his gravesite had born a sandstone marker stating "Paul Ferguson. Died about 1825". During the 1930's the WPA (Works Progress Administration) rebuilt the Dexterville Road routing it perilously close to the gravesite. They removed the sandstone marker and fence surrounding the grave and erected a metal marker bearing the same information in its place. Recently in 1999 a committee formed of the Descendants of Paul Ferguson made an attempt to locate and transfer the remains to Mount Vernon Cemetery. They obtained permits from the state highway department and the Kentucky Department of Human Resources to exhume the body under the direction of Coroner Gerald Jones on November 10th. The attempt was unsuccessful and the metal marker was put back in place until future plans can be made. Plans for an historic marker to be placed on the original site of the grave are underway, as are plans for a DAR monument to be placed in the Mount Vernon Cemetery.

note:  the Paul Ferguson  who served in Craven Count, NC,  may actually  have been Paul Ferguson, Junior.  Paul Ferguson, Sr. shows on his Revolutionary War Pension Application that he fought at the Battle of Fish Dam Ford (South Carolina) under the command of Thomas Sumter.  His pay stub for services rendered is on file with the Chester County Historical and Genealogical Society and it is also for services rendered in South Carolina.  However, since the boundaries of North and South Carolina and their counties have undergone changes since the late 1700’s, it is also possible that the area in which Paul Ferguson, Sr. lived was once in Craven County, NC

Plans for the DAR monument have not been completed as of 2003 so all that is left to mark his death is a rusted roadside marker (see picture).

Annie is probably buried at the Ferguson Cemetery near their home although no marker exists today.

If all children living with this couple on the census of 1820 were theirs, Paul Jr. and Catherine had 10 children.

When Paul and Elizabeth Ann Sutton Ferguson prepared to move to Kentucky they sold their land to Paul Ferguson, Jr. as shown by the following transaction in Chester County, SC:

From Court records of Chester County, SC            Deed Book D.

Once Paul Sr. and  Elizabeth Ann Ferguson moved to Kentucky, Paul Jr. stopped using the Jr. after his name.  This has led to much confusion for Chester County, SC genealogists who could not understand that there were actually two Paul Ferguson’s living at the same time for several decades.  However if they will check the US census for 1810 and 1820 they will find Paul Ferguson (Jr.) living in Chester County, SC and Paul Ferguson, Sr. with most of his sons living in Butler County, KY.

Notes for PAUL FERGUSON, JR.:

Nov. 15, 1802 Paul Ferguson (JR.) sold Garrett Graham 100 acres on the Sandy River for $600

Nov 23, 1804 Garrett Graham sold 100 acres on the Sandy River to Paul Ferguson (note:  would have to be Paul Ferguson Jr. because Paul Ferguson Sr. and Annie were already living in Logan County, KY where Garrett and Esther Graham and family soon joined them.)
