| Drums and the sounds they make have come to assume significance that varies in nearly every culture they are played. Irene handcrafts drums using gourds, goat and deer skin and beads. |
| Traditionally the gourd served many purposes, being used for bowls, utensils, ladels, rattles and musical instruments by people living in the tropics and North America. It has been a cultivated plant of both the old and new worlds for thousands of years. |

| The dance rattle is believed to be a gift from the spirits. Rattles were considered sacred by the North American Indian to be used in rituals, religious festivals and by medicine men. Irene hopes that the rattles she creates will help to carry on the heritage of the North American Indian for decades. |
