FOLEY, FOLEY, FOLEY!
What is FOLEY anyway?

Foley is a part of the post-production sound process of film making where sound effects are performed and recorded in time with an edited film. Footsteps, cutlery clinks, falling debris, kissing...are just a few examples of the sound effects that are recreated and recorded in a studio after the film has been edited.

Aren't the Sound Effects recorded when they shoot the film?

Shooting a film is all about realizing the drama. The location sound recordist commonly overlooks the naturally occurring sound effects on set, in favour of the actors? performance and dialogue. Generally a film set is simply not the optimum situation to record the appropriate sound effects. On average, about 95% of the sound effects in a film are created after the shooting process, either by Sound Effects Editors or by a Foley Artist and his or her recording crew.
