| 2/9 | We got the two pigs yesterday. They're brothers and about a month old. When we put them in the cage they scurried into the hidey houses and haven't really moved around too much since. This morning they've decided to camp out in the Y-shaped PVC pipe. They are eating the pellets, hay, and even nibbling on the alfalfa cubes. We tried to feed them romaine lettuce yesterday, but I don't think they ate any. We'll try again today with some other veggies, like red peppers and cilantro. The wood pellet & aspen bedding isn't working out so well for us. The pigs kick it up pretty easy and it seems like they can't get a firm footing when dashing around. We have lots of fleece ready to go, so we'll try that sometime this week. We just need to get new towels to replace the old ones that we'll be using underneath the fleece. More later :) |
| 2/10 | Well it looks like Ronald and Patrick are getting adjusted to their new home. We watched them INHALE the pellets, cilantro, and water last evening. They seem to have a routine. One pig would eat and then drink water. Then the other pig would come out of hiding and start eating. They would switch back and forth a few times before scaring themselves and dashing into the Y-shaped PVC pipe. After a few minutes, they would do all of this again. Their poo is more moist this morning, which is good since they are drinking water and eating lots of food. I should be picking up a bag of Oxbow Cavy Performance today. We'll mix it in with their current pellet food, Mazuri. Today we're going to have them try out some green pepper. These guys don't seem too finicky about their food. After today we'll provide lap time for these guys, 3 times a day for 10 min each time. We can't wait to give them free time. I think we'll wait a total of 2 weeks before we do it so that they can get comfy in their new home. |
| 2/11 | Yesterday's lap time was very productive. Ronald is still a bit skittish out of his cage, but he stays put on the towel most of the time. Patrick is wonderful. My wife fed him hay and cilantro and he gobbled it right up. He really loves hay :). I put some extra bedding down in the 90 degree PVC pipe since they like to pee in there. They poo in the Y-shaped PVC pipe, but always push it to the edge of the pipe. Easy cleaning for me. Patrick is becoming very comfortable in the cage, he eats and drinks out in the open with little to no hesitation. He even went to the other food bowl that's further away from their favorite PVC pipe. |
| 2/13 | I changed their bedding yesterday to fleece. We gave the guys freetime while I was cleaning out the cage and they loved it! We set up a pen that's about 3' x 6' with a handful of PVC pipes in there. Patrick loves cilantro, but Ronald is still pretty picky with his veggies. Hopefully we'll find something he likes. The fleece bedding is working out well. They guys love it, they were popcorning in their cage like crazy yesterday. Now they are hanging out in their cozy instead of the y-shaped PVC pipe. Cleaning up the poo is easy, I'm using a brush and a kids' sand shovel. The pee seems to be going throug the fleece and into the two layers of towles. |
| 2/15 | We had to put coroplast siding on the hay rack. Patrick managed to hop up onto the rack and barrel through the hay twice. Pics to come. The fleece is great, we need to change it out today though. I think 3 days is the max right now. They are peeing underneath the hay rack for the most part, so we'll put a huge litterbox there and see what happens. Ronald is still not eating any veggies and Patrick is inhaling every veggie that we offer him. Hopefully we'll find something that Ronald likes. Also, whenever I go to clean up the poo with a sand shovel and brush, both pigs popcorn like nuts. I think we have neat freak pigs :). |
