Daytona International Speedway is a superspeedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is the home of the "The World's Greatest Race", Daytona 500. Each year the Daytona 500 race attracts a large audience who are intrested in motorsports. Although the Daytona 500 gets most of the attention, the huge 480-acre motorsports complex has a varied schedule of racing which also earns it the title of "World Center of Racing." Apart from the 10 major weekends of racing activity, which features 190 mph NASCAR NEXTEL Cup stock cars to 170 mph AMA Superbikes to 125 mph WKA go-karts, the Speedway is booked in advance for almost 2 months each year for testing and development of types of racing. Every year a two week festival of speed known as Speedweeks is held at the racing arena which attracts the best racers of the world. In addition to Busch Series and Craftsman Truck events, the track also hosts the sports-car Rolex 24 at Daytona, and motorcycle and karting events. The track is 2.4 mile and is tri-oval shaped. The track has a seating racing arena has a seating capacity of 168, 000. The track arena also has a 3.56 mile (5.7 km) road course and 44 acre (17.8 hectare) Lake Lloyd in the infield. The track has a banking of 31 degrees. The length of front stretch is 3, 800 feet and the length of backstretch is 3,000 feet. The NASCAR Championship's most important race, the Daytona 500, is held annually at Daytona International Speedway. It is a 200-lap, 500 mile (805 km) stock car race. The list of Daytona 500 winners is very long dating back to the inaugural race in 1959, and includes "The King" Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt. In the history of NASCAR (as of 2004), only two people have been killed at Daytona International Speedway: Neil Bonnett, who was killed in a practice session for the Daytona 500; and Dale Earnhardt — the first person ever to be killed in the Daytona 500, who was killed on the final lap in 2001. The track is owned by International Speedway Corporation. The track was built in 1958 and in March 2004 the track under went a multi-million dollar renovation. Since the renovation the track is known as the “The World Center of Racing” with all the modern facilities.
