The 12th Annual Galletta's
Go-Kart Klassic Championship 150! Saturday, September 23rd, 2006 (150-Lap
Event; #16) At first it looked like the weekend was going to rain
out, but the Classic Race was only delayed.
16 drivers made for the biggest "Klassic" ever! First, let us check the
time-trail starting grid:
2006 EVENT #16: THE 2006 KLASSIC QUALIFIER
TIME-TRIALS (Starting Grid Order; Now with
pictures of pre-race kart & drivers): (Click on each driver's name below for their
pre-race photo! I made the above profiles,
so write me with YOUR profile details and I'll make yours too! Write me
here!)
The start of the race went very slowly as some horrible
crashes from a couple of young drivers and breakdowns by several others
slowed the first third of the race up considerably (and five drivers
even quit due to controversial wrecks and a dispute over rule
enforcement - one pulled because a wrecking rule wasn't enforced and
then four pulled out and left when the wrecking rules were enforced;
enforced at
the request of track owner Mary Stevens who witnessed several of the
wrecks and was concerned for everyone's safety). The lesson is; some
people can't be happy no matter what decision you make, but the two most
important rules are no fighting and no wrecking, and that had to be
enforced. It unfortunately marred the beginning of a truly epic race.
But after that, it was the fiercest, fastest-paced,
closest, and most competitive Classic in history! Wesley Ogre Stevens
(#4), Chris Stevens (who hopped into Matt's #3 when his #8 died with
motor problems while leading!), and Matt Stevens (#33) all held the lead
for large portions of the race, and all three of them lost the lead due
to mechanical problems. This left a fast Robbie Jimenez (#5) in the lead
with nobody really able to challenge him, and with his late
grandfather's memory spurring him on. Yet, in taking it too easy too
late in the race, Ogre was able to make the pass, which set up a brutal
leading 4-kart battle back and forth that was a spectacle to watch, with
all in attendance cheering and commenting on the great finish. In the
above two photos show this battle, where the lead shuffled considerably
in the latter half in the race, with Ogre, Rob, Matt and Chris in a
4-kart train. Then, a scoring problem caused a premature caution on lap
140, and set the stage for a memorable final 10-lap shootout. With Ogre
leading, Robbie attempted to pass him and fell off the track which
enabled Matt Stevens and his brother Chris to move past him. Then, with
Matt going for the win, and nearly getting the pass, lost ground as Ogre
held him off and Chris and Rob were able to execute a pass on him as
well.
Left: Ogre (#4) leads Rob (#5), Matt (#33), and Chris
(#3) with 10 laps to go. Right: Ogre (#4) leads Chris (#3), Rob (#5), Matt (#33), and Fred (#2)
on the final lap!
The final result after 150 furious laps? Well, in a surprise
upset...
OGRE WINS! OGRE WINS! OGRE WINS!
579 year-old Wesley James TrOgre Stevens becomes the third winner in the
twelve year history of the event, yet it is still a family affair, as he
interrupts his two boys' domination of the event and wins and holds the
streak of only the home team winning.
The final finishing order of this the largest and most competitive
"Klassic" is as follows:

to update with more pictures, commentary, and possibly driver/kart
profiles. Meanwhile, the newest updated points standings. With a new
points system in place for the 150 lap event (with three times the
points of a 50-lap event, additional points for time-trial placement and
bonus points for laps-lad (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), the competitors who
attended scored massive points increases. Let us check them next...
2006
Galletta's Go-Karts Point Standings
After 16 feature events from 6/11/2006 thru 9/23/2006:
POINTS SCORING SYSTEM IS IN RULES
SECTION! Each heat and feature is started in a handicap order,
reversed from points-per-event (low-to-high). Inexperienced drivers
with less than 10 races and wreck-prone drivers start in the back
regardless of points. Points are scored based on finishing positions
in heats and features (with bonus points for each feature lap in the top
3 spots).
(A ^ in wins means Classic win this year. A * in win category means a shared tie, a
* in name category means
track championships.)
