At that same time a research ship is attacked by space creatures that break through the hull to feed. A few scientists take refuge in a sealed room. Later in Earth orbit, Dr. Evelynne Simms is assigned to the crew. Introductions and a tour of the ship are cut short by Earth Consortium Command. Captain Graegor's hesitation to answer a derelict ship's distress call draws criticism from Dr. Simms. Their debate continues en route aboard ship. When the Eclipse arrives, scavenging space creatures see the ship as the next meal. Uranna begins work on nanotechnology weapons. Dyson engineers a remote pilot device. Dr. Simms researches acidic secretions given by the creatures. Dr. Simms stops Uranna's plan to release her weapon, certain the creatures will counteract the nanites in their own favor. Uranna is offended by the junior crewmember's interference. Dyson offers advice on dealing with Uranna. Dr. Simms requests he keep his opinions of her personal business to himself. Uranna apologizes to Dr. Simms for her angered behavior. On the derelict ship, a few creatures jump attach themselves to the Eclipse hull. A scientist aboard the derelict ship starts auto-destruct. Dyson volunteers to use an enviro-suit to blast the creatures from the hull. He is attacked and adrift in space. The ship is taken into tight solar orbit. The creatures jump to their deaths for the star as a last meal. With Dyson's return the Eclipse returns to the derelict vessel. No creatures are seen on the vessel. Uranna suspects a trap but Captain Graegor alone decides to board the ship. He finds the survivors inside. Their leader cannot be persuaded to stop the destruct command. He would die before anyone gets the data crystal deliverable to Consortium Command. Uranna sees the creatures come around the opposite side of the other ship. They were hiding.
