Members of the nail salon community will come together with representatives from regulatory agencies for the first community forum in Oakland on issues of health and safety. This event will highlight the voice of workers and owners, their experience with health and safety at the workplace and the challenges they face. This forum will be coordinated in collaboration with the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative.
San Jose Community Forum – July 16, 2007
Members of the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative organized the first community forum with nail salon workers and owners in San Jose. Within this event, over 50 members of the community learned about what various members of the Collaborative are doing to address issues of health and safety in nail salons. Trang Nguyen, ACRJ organizer, conducted a presentation on the inspection and citation process and its connection to health and safety in the workplace.

Members of the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative coordinated an informational hearing with Senator Carole Migden to raise visibility & awareness on the issue of health and safety for the nail salon industry, to conduct fact finding and to get responses from agencies regarding the issue. Over 100 members of the community, including supporting organizations, attended the hearing and voiced their experience on the panels or during public comment. Nhung Pham, a nail salon worker and leader of the POLISH project, testified during the third panel on the inspections and citations process and the challenge of language barriers.
