| Mission statement To endeavour to meet the holistic needs of orphaned children in Zambia to enable them to have a chance in life, and in doing so break the cycle of HIV/AIDS and the resulting poverty. Background Faith Orphanage Foundation (F O F) is a non-governmental, non-profit, and non-denominational Christian organisation that is committed to assisting the orphaned children in Zambia. F O F provides registered orphans with educational requirements and assists them with material needs such as food, clothes and medical care as necessary. F O F enables children to participate in programs where they can develop valuable life-skills that in turn promotes self-sufficiency and confronts malnutrition and other health and social problems. Sponsored children are living in family situations and have access to Christian teaching through village orphan centres and churches. |
History An increasing number of children in Zambia are being orphaned as a direct result of HIV/AIDS . It is currently estimated that there are 330 - 500 HIV/AIDS related deaths in Zambia per day. Touched by the despair of the children left behind, Faith Liyena a young christian nurse, made it her first priority to offer hope to these children. After careful planning and consideration. The Faith Orphanage Foundation was born and registered in 1993 as a Non-Governmental christian Charitable Organisation. What begun as a humble concern for children orphaned largely as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic throughout Africa, the vision of F O F has become internationally recognised, and is now caring for 2 500 orphans. |
| Objectives To meet the needs of orphaned children regardless of personal background, religion, health status or gender. To endeavour to ensure that a high standard of care and a positive and life changing environment is made available to orphans registered with F O F. To encourage the development of self-sufficiency among orphans by active participation in orphan community projects. To promote child welfare policies and education regarding HIV/AIDS related illnesses and be a source of care to those children who have been left victims. Strategy There are presently 2 500 orphans being cared for by F O F. Rather than housing orphans in an institution, children registered with F O F are cared for by extended/foster families. Orphan communities are alocated in 16 F O F centres: 7 situated along the Chingola/Solwezi road (North-western Zambia) and 9 in Kalulushi area of the Copperbelt province. Current activities Once the basic needs of registered orphans are met, F O F branches out practical help from the orphans themselves into educational programmes that assist the broader community at large. These projects ultimately contribute to the long term self-sufficiency of the Foundation Orphanage Foundation, promoting a sense of community co-operation. Permaculture With dramatically rising inflation rates in Zambia, rural communities are struggling to purchase fertilizers for the cultivation of crops. Consequently, crop failure and food shortages have become a cause to many orphan communities since natural/organic farming techniques (known as permaculture) have been replaced by European influence. In recognising the need for permaculture training, F O F has developed organic farming programs, establishing orphan-community farming plots in each centre. Health and nutrition In confronting the prevalence of malnutrition among orphan communities in rural Zambia, F O F conducts regular health awareness seminars and advocates ‘health and nutrition clubs’ within each centre. Groups of orphans guardians and local women meet regularly with F O F nutrition teachers and government school teachers, to learn the importance of health and hygiene. Participants gain practical experience in preparing a wide and varied selection of locally grown foods, and learn the importance of maintaining a balanced diet. In addition to issues of food hygiene, these established programs educate communities on increasingly serious health concerning HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, cholera, and malaria. In eduction lies the key to prevention. The ultimate goal of F O F Health and Nutrition Clubs is to eliminate malnutrition within orphan populations and wider communities. |
