sarah was origionally a novel by jeremy terminator LeRoy circa 2000
the novel was a short story about an 11 yearold trans girl truckstop prostitute and her search for people to take her seriously as a girl and a sexual being and a person worthy of love. of note is that this is the fictionalised autobiographical grist or jeremys own childhood.
additionally there were peculations abbounding that the reclusivee leRoy was actually the invention of gay horror smutauthor dennis cooper. Leroy was a charetcor of cooper's imagination, representing the boy cooper had loved when they both were teenagers...much of coopers writing, which revolves arround gay me cruing for sex and finding violence in a quest for some way to fill emotional emptyness, was riddled with clues to the torch he still held for the boy he had known. he hoped the boy woul stummble upon his books and see the clues and come track him down. it was after cooper published the final book in a multipart series ment to be a riddle ment for the boy, that cooper learned that the boy had infact died years ago. before cooper had even began writing.
so leRoy was assumed to be some strange surrogate charector obsession cooked up by cooper, some hustler filled the role, and a picture of coopers boy hood freind appeared on the back cover of sarah captioned as a picture of leRoy.
at least this is all how it was relayed to me by my freind f. most of this can be summed up as bewildering malarky. that is %40 true... f. was a former really tall dragqueen, current post-masters-studies-in-contemporary-post-post-modern-french-literature with a minor in gay lit... f. was doing a huge disertation on sarah so i got to the book for an evening while f. was drunk watching sex n the city over and over. i was initially drawn to the book cuz it had a lil pink ribbon to mark your page and i wanted to yank it out and keep it.
leRoy would compound and further mess all mystery by hiring people like courtney love to read in place of him at book launches while he hid in the back of the room. he is also never photographed and always wears a wig and sunglasses everywhere.....
this was done in this periode in 2001-2002 when i was happily un employed and spent all day in bed drawing....
i did about 5 comics like this where the rules were:
1. do the whole comic in one sitting, preferably no sleeping till done, definately no going outside.
2. do it with a pen, no erasing.
3. no fussing about thwe quality of the art werk... sometimes simple is good i nitpick my drawing way to much...
the end result was sposed to be an excercise in doing the ideas instead and getting them realised NOW !!! as im generally more inclined to working and reworking stuff and then dropping off and shoving it in a drawer for years.
sarah on the high seas went right in the filing cabinet after completion... i really liked how the overall storie turned out and wanted to give it extra special treatment nad clean it up all nice...
instead it sat in my desk for 3 years.
here it is..
as messy as i ralphed it up over 26 hours of straight drawing
