Took a short trip in July to the Gold Basin which is one of my favorite
prospecting
spots. It's located in NW Arizona near Meadview and Dolan Springs approximately
40 miles SE of Las Vegas. This area is famous for gold nuggets, gold pickers,
gold
dust, and a occasional meteorite. Some meteorites are worth much more than
gold
so never toss suspect rocks. The July temperature is over 100 in this area,
not a lot
of prospectors to be found here this time of year.
Once I got settled in and started detecting I would come across these small
rock piles
shaped like pyramids. Usually they would be next to a old dig hole
someone covered
from metal detecting, what was the meaning of this?
They seemed to be spread over the whole area.
One area seemed to have more than its share and was gridded off by someone
recently.
Whenever you find a gridded area you can bet a few nuggets came out of
it at one time.
Then I ran into another prospector detecting nearby, who goes by the name
of Texas
George. Seems each time he finds a nugget he leaves a small pile of rocks
next to the
spot to let others know the area has nuggets. He has found over 120 nuggets
in this
area since he arrived in November, little pyramid mystery solved.
