History
In 1888, Silas J. Fenton and family moved to Louisiana from the state of New York. In the spring of 1893, Mr. Fenton built a home at the present site of Fenton, Louisiana. The same year, he designated 240 acres to be surveyed for a town along the Watkins Railroad (later the Missouri Pacific Railroad).
The Fenton Cemetery was established as a family cemetery by Silas J. Fenton at the death of his mother, Philena Fenton, in 1898. Philena was born August 29, 1808 in up-state New York and was brought to Louisiana in a chair due to having her hip broken. She died on January 12, 1898 at the age of 89 years, four months and fourteen days. There are two tombstones in the cemetery with 1892 dates on them. It is not known if these burials preceded the burial of Philena Fenton or if they were relocated from another burial site to the Fenton Cemetery later.
For a hundred plus years, the Fenton Cemetery belonged to the Baker and Fenton families. When Silas and his son, Will, died, they were buried in the Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery in Lake Charles, LA. The ownership of the cemetery, then passed to Misses Reva and Marie Fenton, daughters of Will. After Miss Reva died, ownership and operation of the cemetery fell, solely, to Miss Marie. The land where the cemetery is located was later purchased by Mr. Bill Abell of Welsh. In 1999, Mr. Abell donated (by transfer of deed) the acre of land where the cemetery is located to the Fenton Cemetery Association.
Over the years, individuals desiring to be buried in the cemetery were granted burial plots without cost. For the past twenty years, or so, the cemetery has been maintained by Miss Marie Fenton and other community volunteers, notably the Sharp Family along with financial contributions from other community members.
In June 2002, a new wrought-iron fence was installed across the front of the cemetery to replace the barbed-wire fence which had been there for years. In July 2002, a flagpole was erected in the middle of the cemetery. The new fence and flagpole were made possible by donations from Miss Marie Fenton who passed away in May 2002. The flagpole once stood in the front yard of Miss Marie's home.

"Happy now are the dead who die in the Lord, they shall find rest from their labors."
There are three known veterans buried in the Fenton Cemetery. On Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year, a small American flag is placed at the foot of their grave as we honor the memory of these two veterans. Additionally, six large US flags are flown along the front fence in tribute to all those who served, suffered, sacrificed, and in some cases paid the supreme sacrifice, in the defense of freedom. May God bless those honored dead who paid the price that we may live in peace and freedom. And, may we never forget that.... FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.
Veterans Buried in the Fenton Cemetery: George H. Greene, John H. Langley and Venice O. Nash.

Fenton Cemetery Association
The Fenton Cemetery is owned, operated and maintained by a private association of individuals from the Fenton community. Day-to-day activities of the cemetery, to include operational policy guidelines and rules and regulations, rest in the hands of an elected Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is elected each year at the Association's Annual Meeting. The cemetery is operated in accordance with the Laws of the State of Louisiana under the auspices of the Louisiana Cemetery Board.
The Association holds Family Work Days in the cemetery each year during which improvements are made to the cemetery by community volunteers. Parents bring their children and a picnic lunch is enjoyed by all. In this way, the children learn the history of the cemetery and what is necessary to keep the cemetery looking good.
Most Association members have a vested interest in the cemetery by virtue of having family members buried therein or intentions to be buried there themselves. As a community cemetery, burials are restricted to those individuals living within a 15-mile radius of the cemetery. Burial plots in the cemetery are available for purchase from the Association. Individuals wishing to join the Association may do so by paying annual dues of $25.00.
Donations to the Association's "cemetery maintenance fund" are welcomed. All funds collected go toward the upkeep and improvement of the cemetery.
