Hello and welcome. ^^ At the moment, this site is being used for the purpose of inserting text from an ongoing debate. The first paragraph contains my opponent's standpoint, and the second contains mine. ^^ If my opponent opts to retort, his rebuttal will be added.
Opponent: Well, it's becoming more and more apparent how quickly everything can change. The irony of it however, is that at the same time nothing is different. The more I think about the state of things, the less they make sense. The less they make sense, the more I become curious and thus the more I ponder them. So many people are so intolerant in these modern times. I was born luckily enough for myself, a Caucasian, middle-class, roman-catholic. I say I was lucky because these days, it's the safest way to be. People kill each other and sometimes themselves simply because of color; from skin to hair to eyes. Racism, Extremism, or Hatred of any kind are unspeakable atrocities and the greatest crime one can commit. If we all painted ourselves purple tomorrow, we would all still remain men. There is no difference between us all except our history, and to each his own; His history is meant for pride, not exploit or overbearing ego. So much intoleration, it leads to nothing but fear and anger and hatred and violence and death and thus more violence and death and fear and hatred. We must break the cycle. Who are you to say everything you know is right. Why is everyone else always the one who is wrong? Most of the intoleration that exists exists due to ignorance. Anti-Semitism is a prime example. JESUS OF NAZARETH WAS ARRESTED, TRIED, SENTENCED, AND EXECUTED BY THE ROMANS, NOT THE JEWS. Pontius Pilate executed Jesus of Nazareth for his activism against the roman power. The Latin word that describes the two men whom he helps to cleanse their souls before they die as a result of crucifixion beside him can also mean political prisoner, thus Jesus of Nazareth was executed for the words he praised because it meant one man, an emperor, and his many political figureheads would lose a tiny bit of power. NOT BY "THE BIG BAD JEWS". Anti-Semitism is a waste of emotion, time, and very sadly human life. All from ignorance. Why must it be human nature to hate not love because of our superficial differences or because someone's god has a different name than yours? When it comes down to it, every great prophet from Jesus to Mohammed to Buddha preached the same thing. We must live our lives as brothers and sisters in one world, without hatred and animosity towards each other for the wrongs done onto us in the past. All gods, regardless of your faith desire us to live our lives well with our brothers' hand in ours, not a gun to his head. Although I was raised Christian, I no longer believe in the misconception of Jesus of Nazareth to have been the son of God. He was a great man and I will follow his preachings until the day I die, as well as Moses' commandments, the teachings of the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, as well as those of Mohammed. I believe the message Jesus of Nazareth meant to convey when he called himself the son of God is that we are all sons and daughters under the Great Spirit that put us here and continues to watch over and guide us through our lives. His sacrifice is one we are all meant to give; our lives before we should ever even consider violence. For in the words of the great Mahatmas Gandhi, "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." Sadly many cannot see the light until they are blind. Greet your fellow (wo)man and greatest adversary alike; with open arms and embrace. Shake their hand, console the woed and wronged, celebrate with the fortunate. The only fight worth fighting begins here and now and using the strongest weapons man has been endowed, his voice and mind, not his destruction. Help me start the revolution.
Yours Truly: You said, "JESUS OF NAZARETH WAS ARRESTED, TRIED, SENTENCED, AND EXECUTED BY THE ROMANS, NOT THE JEWS." I'm afraid that this statement is only partially correct. Without being Anti-Semitic, it was in fact the Jews who chose to crucify Jesus when asked by Pilot. Do you want Jesus or Barabbas? The crowd of Jews shouted, "Give us Barabbas!" Not to mention, the Scribes and Pharisees who found him guilty and demanded that Jesus be crucified. What's more, why do you refuse to believe Jesus was the Son of God? Onto the subject of peace within all religions – let me say that I have no problem with your idealistic view on peace in the world. ^^ However, there can only be one truth. What would that make the others, but a lie? If one proposition can be true, and its opposite is also true, what is a lie? Knowing the truth carries with it vast responsibility, and that is to inform others of that truth. If they reject it, so be it. If they persecute me for it, so be it. It must be done. I still pray for peace. ^^
How can a mere man, as you call Jesus, rise from the dead? Jesus Himself announced that His resurrection would attest His power over death, and consequently His deity (John 2:18-22). The historical evidence for the resurrection is so compelling that the famed Harvard law professor, Simon Greenleaf (the greatest authority on legal evidences in the 19th century), concluded that any cross-examination of the eyewitness testimonies archived in Scripture will result in "an undoubting conviction of their integrity, ability, and truth" subsequent to a thorough inspection of the historical documentation. The crux of his verdict, as the renowned Royall professor of law at Harvard, was that any unbiased jury overtly examining the evidence would inevitably come to the conclusion that Christ had risen from the dead. Frankly, the Resurrection is an irrefutable fact of history. Indeed. I would go so far as to say that no one can examine the Resurrection with an open mind without becoming convinced of its legitimacy. And that is not mere evangelical rhetoric.
Tolerance in personal relationships is a virtue, but tolerance in truth is a travesty. Two plus two doesn't equal 17. It equals four. If this truth is circumvented in calculus, the inevitable result is chaos. Likewise, to compromise the claims of Christ can only lead to catastrophe. Please bear in mind that I do not mean to offend you by my arguments. I only mean and desire peace. ^^ If you choose to respond, let this not be a heated debate, but a kind-hearted form of "deliberation". Pax vobiscum! (Peace be with you.) |
