Background:
Liriel Aribani is the oldest daughter of Phaere Aribani, Matron Mother of House Aribani, the Second House of the drow city Menzoberranzan. Liriel was supposed to, as is custom amongst the drow, train to be a cleric of Llolth, the Spider Queen, at the drow academy. Her first five years proved she was not cut out to be a priestess. Liriel was consistently reprimanded for offenses ranging from disobedience and misconduct to simply not showing up for class at all. It was only the standing of her house that kept her from simply being expelled from the academy and sent home in disgrace. During her time at the academy, Liriel spent more time studying magic, particularly necromancy. Finally, the academy’s High Priestess spoke with Liriel’s mother, and Liriel returned home and began studying the skills of a fighter, while continuing to study necromancy. She was one of the best students of martial skills House Aribani had seen in many years. She became so good that she managed to outclass her brother, Rizzen Aribani, who was being considered for the position of House Weapon Master. Liriel went to her mother and spoke to her about taking that position for herself. Phaere allowed it, and Liriel became the House Weapon Master, in charge of training the warriors of House Aribani. Rizzen, needless to say, was extremely angry with her, because, as a male, House Weapon Master was the best he could hope for, and so Liriel’s brother vowed revenge. The day came when Liriel had to lead a raid on the surface. That day changed Liriel’s life forever. She had always known she was different from other drow elves, but she didn’t know how different until then. The raid was on a small village of high elves that had taken out a drow patrol earlier that year. Liriel, her sister Vierna and a group of warriors went to the village at night. Liriel sent scouts to assess the village’s defenses. Those scouts returned saying there were guards patrolling the perimeter, but nothing they couldn’t handle. Liriel gave the order to attack. The drow moved in quietly, and the assault began. Losses were taken on both sides, but the drow prevailed. The village’s guards retreated into the village, and the drow pressed the attack. Once the guards were dealt with, Liriel was about to give the order to secure prisoners. Her sister was one step ahead of her. Vierna began killing elves wholesale, and the rest of the drow force joined in. The villagers resisted, but they were easily overwhelmed, and Liriel was powerless to stop the slaughter. She watched as her sister found an elven woman who pleaded for mercy. Vierna stabbed the elf woman with her poisoned dagger, and kicked aside the body. There was a small child, little more than an infant, hiding in the doorway of the elf woman’s home, and Vierna smiled with wicked glee and turned the dagger upon the child. Liriel almost could not contain herself, but she was wise enough to know that discretion is the better part of valor. The drow returned home, Liriel barely saying anything more than an order here and there. Shortly thereafter, Liriel decided to leave, packed her possessions, and walked from the house in secret. Her uncle, Dinin’tel Aribani, stopped her on her way out. “Leaving, Liriel?” “Yes, Uncle, I can stand the evil of our people no longer. You can try and stop me, but you can’t change my mind.” He replied, “Stop you? Nay, I am here simply to wish you well. You have the courage I don’t have. I like our people less than you do, but I cannot leave…the surface world would never accept a drow, and the dangers of the Underdark wilds are too great. I hope you find your way.” Liriel nodded and walked away. Years later she would meet her uncle again on the surface, just as years later she would come face to face with her sister, Vierna. Vierna died by Liriel’s hand, her uncle and another drow, Calathein, would be seen safely to Geraldtown. Liriel joined with an adventuring group patroned by the powerful wizard Morwin. Her companions now are Rowandar Gladius, a former gladiator champion from Homaria, Gaston, a warrior champion who was for a time a knight, Peter, a Knight of Camelot, and Akasha, perhaps Liriel’s best friend, a wizard from Ravenloft. As far as Liriel knows, her mother is still attempting to chase Liriel down, and of course she has encountered her brother on numerous occasions.
