We would stay up late, talking and having fun after gigs. I asked him, before I was even recording this album, if he’d duet with me on that song and he kind of mumbled something about not talking about work. But on the last day of mixing the album, I thought ‘To hell with it, I’m just gonna ask him” and he said yeah, come over to the house. I went over there, he handed me a bottle of prosecco and we listened to the album about ten times that night - and he agreed to be in the studio the next day. It was very special, having him be so cool about it. There was no ‘Talk to my agent’, none of that crap. The rest of the interview >>> Voodoo Ball featuring Shane McGowan & Jerry Fish in aid of Haiti charity Button Factory : Temple Bar : Dublin 2 - 29th July, 2009 Press realease from Haven: Some of the top musical talent Ireland has to offer are coming together in aid of the poorest country in the western world – Haiti. Publicans and other business people in the Festival of Kerry Support Group are meeting next week to discuss the funding of the festival’s ˆ100,000 street entertainment programme. Meanwhile, the programme for the 2009 festival is being finalised, with the major events to be held in the festival dome. One of the main attractions will be a concert, on Monday August 24, featuring Sharon Shannon, Damien Dempsey, the Saw Doctors, Shane MacGowan and Dessie O’Halloran. MORE >>> 19.06.2009 "Hoping's Got Talent" fundraiser event for Palestinian refugee children held at Cafe De Paris London, England - 19 Jun 09 Dozens of British celebrities were out in force at the Cafe de Paris in London last night for the annual Hoping’s Got Talent charity karaoke event. Judged by Kate Moss and X Factor’s Louis Walsh, the event raised money for the Hoping Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to showing Palestinian refugee children that their struggle to transform their lives is encouraged and supported by people in Britain and throughout the rest of the world. The Hoping Foundation provides grants to community projects working with children in Palestinian refugee camps. Guests included Sienna Miller, Mario Testino, Lucien Freud, Guy Ritchie, Tracey Emin, David Furnish, Isaac Ferry and Patrick Cox. The evening was hosted by Patrick Kielty and auctioneer Oliver Barker of Sotheby's. The evening raised ?500,000 in total, which will be donated directly to children's projects in Palestine. The Pogues star Shane MacGowan raised ?12,000 with his Five Minute Painting and a further ?30,000 performing his hit Fairytale Of New York with artist and director Sam Taylor Wood. A bit on his collaboration with Shane is cited here: Irish singer/songwriter The Mighty Stef a force to be reckoned with By Mike Farragher, Irish Voice Newspaper Columnist Published Thursday, May 21, 2009, 1:18 PM "100 Midnights has some high-powered guests that lift these songs to new heights. He collaborates with Cait O’Riordan and Shane MacGowan, the later who lends his vocals to haunting Townes Van Zandt cover “Waitin’ Around to Die.” “He told her to take care of me/she headed down to Tennessee/it’s easier to wait around to die,” croaks Shane in one of the most stirring vocals he has put on record this decade. Since Shane has been on a deathwatch in the Irish community for years, the irony of him doing this song is not lost on the listener. “With regard Shane, that connection was made through my manager, Frank Murray, who managed the Pogues for years. Frank always wanted Shane and I to sing a song together, and since Shane is one of my all time heroes I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him. He was a total gentleman and we had a lot of fun and laughs in the studio!” MORE >>> Shane is back to Ireland, since 23rd. Went to see Jerry Fish at The Academy.. 17.05.2009 IT'S A TOOTH FAIRY TALE FOR SHANE MOUTHY Shane MacGowan has something to smile about at last – a set of teeth. By Henrietta Ronson Sunday Express Sunday May 17,2009 The former Pogues front man happily flashed the pearlies last week instead of his trademark gummy snarl, even though he must have paid a jaw-dropping sum for them. Last year, Shane, 51, famous for his Fairy Tale of New York duet with Kirsty MacColl, said: “I’m going to get my teeth done – emergency dentures to stop my face falling apart. “I might get some dentures in and leave it at that, or I might get them done gradually.” Top dentists in London said implants can cost up to ?2,500 a tooth, taking Shane’s bill for a full set of 32 to ?80,000. And some asorted comments: "Now he actually looks somewhat normal, and not quite so much like Smeagol on a drunken rampage. The question remains; if Shane MacGowan has teeth in his mouth, is nothing sacred anymore? What is the world coming to?" -- Lady Garfunkel I think it’s a shame actually. I liked his old rotten teeth and toothless grimace. I think it suited his image as the drunk and incoherent lead singer of the Irish band The Poques. His dishevelled and debauched appearance became his trademark and that became a statement that portrayed the band’s image and essence. The next thing we’ll be hearing is that Shane MacGowan has given up drink! -- Christianna 16.05.2009 THE NEWS WE WERE WAITING FOR FOR SO LONG.. Guess Chew? (with pics) The Sun 16 May 2009 HELL-RAISING former POGUES star SHANE MacGOWAN has finally swapped his infamous gnashers for a set of pristine new teeth. The singer, who was unmistakable for his gappy smile, jetted to Spain for some serious dental work and now looks almost unrecognisable in my new snap. He says he had the emergency dentures to stop his face “falling apart” after 35 years on the thrash. Oh bye gum! Shane MacGowan FINALLY gets a full set of new teeth By Caroline Graham Daily Mail 16 May 2009 Add to My Stories He is infamous for his shabby looks and gummy smile. But all that's in the past now for Shane MacGowan. The Pogues singer has been spotted in Malaga with a new set of gnashers. MacGowan has reportedly spent the last month in Spain having extensive dental work to repair the acute damage to his mouth caused by decades of hard partying. During one all-day drinking session in Limerick, Ireland, he fell over a wall, smashing his teeth on a pile of bricks. The 51-year-old became renowned for his dishevelled appearance and his terrible teeth, which eventually became his trademark. But it wasn't popular with everyone. One American record company airbrushed some teeth onto him on an album cover so as not to put off U.S. fans. MacGowan had recently talked about getting his teeth fixed to stop his face 'falling apart'. We think the dentally-discerning Yanks would approve of his pegs now... A Smile Only A Dealer Could Love! Hollywood In Style 16 May 2009 The crack rock of my eye, Shane MacGowan of The Pogues, used to have the mouth of a day-shift truck stop methwhore who is famous for giving handjobs with her mouth (copyright: Hipster Grifter). Well, gone are the days of eating nothing but mushy Crack-O-Meal, because Shane got new teefs! The Sun says Shane stumbled on over to Spain so that a dentist could fill with mouth with shiny grey Chiclets! Shane said he only had the surgery, because his face was “falling apart.” Aw. Don’t you kind of miss the old Shane? His mouth looked like the inside of a bag of melted Gummi Bears and there was something endearing about that. Although, it probably won’t be long before Shane’s got his beautiful old mouth back after he finds a dealer who will trade a baggie of the bad shit for a toof! 13.05.2009 Will MacGowan return from his Spain holiday with new set of teeth? By MF The Herald 13 May 2009 "Is hellraising Pogues star Shane MacGowan swapping his trademark gnashers for a more pristine smile? Rumour has it that the singer -- who's famous for his toothless grin -- has jetted to Spain this month on a secret mission to have extensive dental work. The star has previously said it was high time to get his teeth fixed and intended on seeing a dentist before they got worse..." MORE >>> Pogues get Wire service by DARREN BOYLE Sunday Mirror 26 Apr 2009 The cult TV show based in Baltimore, Maryland, uses several of MacGowan's favourite songs at key points during the show. One showbiz insider told the Irish Sunday Mirror: "Shane is going to make a killing from The Wire. "Apart from the royalties he is also getting a host of new fans from the show. "His music appears all over the place during the five series. The Wire is massive across the globe. "The Wire might not have won too many awards, but it is the best show on the box and Irish viewers are definitely missing out." Re-view and pre-view of albums that Shane guests on: Album Review: 100 Midnights by The Mighty Stef Irishmusictelevision.com " ...Stef recognises, if not salutes the influence and comparisons between his work and that of The Pogues by included duets with two band members. ‘Safe at Home’ is the first of these duets to appear with former Pogues bassist Cait O’Riordan. The track is a dark tune, with a haunting vibe provided by O’Riordan’s vocals in comparison with the rawness of Stefs inclusions. The frontman himself, Shane MacGowan joins Stef for a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Waitin’ Around To Die’. True to MacGowan’s nature and lifestyle the track is a down and dirty drinking tune, and firmly plants Stef as Ireland’s modern version of MacGowan’s lyrical talent and raw vocals..." By Angela Sammon The Irish World 28 Apr 2009 "A night with Sharon Shannon, Shane MacGowan and Camille O'Sullivan may sound like an odd mish-mash, but last week's show at the Forum in Kentish Town was a revelation. By anyone’s standards it was an exceptional night of Irish entertainment. Shannon dazzled, MacGowan fumbled (in his inimitable way) and O’Sullivan startled. What began as a standard traditional Irish music show, evolved to become a foot-stomping powerhouse performance from the entire ensemble of characters on stage. I surprised my folk music mad man with tickets to see Sharon Shannon Big Band with Camille O’Sullivan and Shane McGowan. Such a good night! We got jiggy to some seriously outstanding Irish Tunes. I’m not sure you know who Shane McGowan is. Ever heard of The Pogues – responsible for such hits as Fairytale of New York, Dirty Ol’ Town and Irish Rover? He is the founding Lead Singer. And what a character he is! I actually almost walked into him on the street outside the venue." MORE >>> Gig review: Sharon Shannon Big Band **** By FIONA SHEPHERD The Scotsman 20 Apr 2009 "AS IF Sharon Shannon's seven-piece Big Band was not enough musicianship to be going on with, with their full, rock-tinged sound and subtle infusions of African rhythms, Spanish guitar, jazz violin and Bob Marley references, the likeable accordion plaADVERTISEMENTyer was hosting a couple of special guest vocalists on this outing – the Fringe's favourite cabaret star, Camille O'Sullivan, and Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan, the latter brandishing a can of lager and a rebellious cigarette. " MORE >>> Photos: By Barkingmadjock - Flickr set Sharon Shannon & Shane MacGowan Ironworks, INVERNESS, Scotland - 16 Apr, 2009 SHARON SHANNON & SHANE McGOWAN, Ironworks, Inverness By PAUL CAMPBELL UltraRocks - News of The World 18 Apr 2009 "THERE'S only one Shane McGowan," chants the sell-out crowd in anticipation of the legendary Pogues frontman. Before he saunters onto the stage however, it's down to the main act - award-winning Irish chanteuse Sharon - to keep the audience on their toes. And that she does. Flashing an infectious smile, she guides her band through an eclectic mix of traditional accordion and fiddle music with occasional forays further afield - like the sparkle of reggae that eases its way into the epic crescendos of the stunning Flyodesq. With McGowan by now firmly attached to the microphone, Irish Rover goes down an absolute storm. Rainy Night in Soho is pretty special too - his voice may drift to the wrong side of gravelly sometimes but there's no denying he's a compelling performer who can hold a crowd in the palm of his hand. And though he delivers a rousing climax in the shape of Dirty Old Town, the evening's highlight is - what else? - Fairytale Of New York. Hot hooley from Sharon and all-star band – and Shane Published: 21 April, 2009 The Inverness Courier "IF there is a problem with Irish accordion ace Sharon Shannon's all star Big Band, it might just be that it is too good. Not much of a reason to complain, but given the standard of her seven strong backing band and the other guests who popped up during the two hour plus set and Shannon's own generosity to her fellow performers, at times Shannon seemed more like a master of ceremonies than the top billed star of the show." MORE >>> Star turn from ex-Pogues star Published: 23 April, 2009 Highland News "CHEEK to say it, but was I the only one considering main act Sharon Shannon an inconvenient warm-up to sozzled legend Shane McGowan? No, I don’t think so, given the huge, raucous cheer ringing around the Ironworks, Inverness, last Thursday when he finally arrived onstage." MORE >>> Wild man Shane doesn't faze award-winning Sharon The Inverness Courier Published: 10 April, 2009 MARCH 17th was a very appropriate day to have a chat with Sharon Shannon. For 20 years the County Clare born musician has been one of Irish traditional music's foremost ambassadors — even if she does give her traditional music a bit of a tweak with influences ranging from Jamaican reggae to French-Canadian reels and she started her recording career with the roots friendly rockers of The Waterboys." MORE >>> Interview with Camille (Shane gets mentioned in brief): Sharon Shannon Big Band, The Picture House Published Date: 17 April 2009 By GARY FLOCKHART 09.04.2009 Shane MacGowan guests on an album It could happen to a Pope! HotPress 25 Mar 2009 Shane MacGowan features on three of the tracks, which grace the new Popes album, Outlaw Heaven. The Celtic barnstormers in question are the title-track, ‘Loneliness Of A Long Distance Drinker’ and ‘Bastard’ – nobody said anything about it being subtle! Also on the guest-list is Shane’s fellow Pogue Spider Stacey. The album was inspired by the time lead singer Paul ‘Mad Dog’ McGuinness spent recently on remand for perverting the course of justice. ‘I hated being stuck in a cockroach, mice infested 8x6 cell for 23 hours a day, but once I got over the bad food and cramped conditions I began to realise it was the best thing to happen to me in a long time,” McGuinness reflects. “I imagined I was in a luxury hotel getting the rest, detox and seclusion I needed to sort my life out. I also met some of the kindest, straightest, upfront people ever, and that was only the murderers! Prison is however the mother of creativity and before you could say ‘Outlaw Heaven’ I was off writing and singing songs to my cellmate. I didn’t have a guitar so I wrote the lyrics down on the three pieces of paper I was allowed every fortnight, the music I composed in my head. If I was able to get to church on Sunday I was able to borrow the priest’s guitar. Thank god for the folkmass – I never thought I’d say that!” The collection is out here on May 8th.
