Money

According to Quran and Sunnah

Hadith - Sahih Muslim Book 8, Number 3506. Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah, r.a. AbuBakr came and sought permission to see Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). He found people sitting at his door and none amongst them had been granted permission, but it was granted to AbuBakr and he went in. Then came Umar and he sought permission and it was granted to him and he found Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) sitting sad and silent with his wives around him.

He (Umar) said: I wanted say something which would make the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) laugh, so he said: Messenger of Allah, I wish you had seen (the treatment meted out to) the daughter of Kharijah when she asked me for some money, and I got up and slapped her on her neck. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) laughed and said: They are around me as you see, asking for extra money.

AbuBakr then got up, went to Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) and slapped her on the neck, and Umar stood up before Hafsah and slapped her saying: You ask Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) for that which he does not possess. They said: By Allah, we do not ask Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) for anything he does not possess. Then he withdrew from them for a month or for twenty-nine days.*

Then this verse was revealed to him: "O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world, and its glitter, Then come! I will make a provision for you and set you free in a handsome manner (divorce)." [Qur'an 33:28] He then went to Aisha and said: I want to propound something to you, Aisha, but want no hasty reply before you consult your parents. She said: Messenger of Allah, what is that? He (the Holy Prophet) recited to her the verse, whereupon she said: Is it about you that I should consult my parents, Messenger of Allah? Nay, I choose Allah, His Messenger, and the Last Abode; but I ask you not to tell any of your wives what I have said. He replied: Not one of them will ask me without my informing her. God did not send me to be harsh, or cause harm, but He sent me to teach and make things easy.

*It was customary that he would withdraw at times of revelation. Withdrawing for such an extended period is not a recommended course of action for a husband when dealing with a marital problem such as finances and a wife who may not be pleased with his financial standing.

Let the rich man spend according to his means, and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allaah has given him[al-Talaaq 65:7]

And give to the kindred his due and to the Miskn (poor) and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift* . [Tafsir. At-Tabar, Vol. 10, Page 158 (Verse 9: 60)]. (Qur'an 17:26)

*You have to follow a middle course in your spendings --- neither a miser nor a spendthrift, and not to be like those who spend in the disobedience of Allah and His Messenger saaws.

Noble Quran 2:188 And eat up not one another's property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g. stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully.

9:85 And let not their wealth or their children amaze you. Allh's Plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.

3:14 Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world's life; but Allh has the excellent return (Paradi

4:29- O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allh is Most Merciful to you.

Noble Qur'an 4:33- And to everyone, We have appointed heirs of that (property) left by parents and relatives. To those also with whom you have made a pledge (brotherhood), give them their due portion (by Wasiya - wills, etc.). Truly, Allh is Ever a Witness over all thi

Noble Qur'an 8:28 And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allh is a mighty reward.

Noble Quran 8:72 Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allh as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help, - these are (all) allies to one another. And as to those who believed but did not emigrate (to you O Muhammad SAW), you owe no duty of protection to them until they emigrate, but if they seek your help in religion, it is your duty to help them except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, and Allh is the All-Seer of what you do.

Debt in Business Transactions Hadith - Muwatta 31.38, Money-Changing: Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'If someone asks you to wait to be paid until he has gone back to his house, do not leave him.' When he returns a dirham to him from the exchange after he has left him, it is like a debt or something deferred. For that reason, it is disapproved of, and the exchange collapses. Umar ibn al-Khattab wanted that all gold, silver and food should not be sold for goods to be paid later. He did not want there to be any delay or deferment in any such sale, whether it involved one commodity or different sorts of commodities."

Poverty Hadith - al-Tirmidhi (2326) and Abu Dawood (1645) [classed as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi and al-Haakim (1/566), and al-Dhahabi agreed with him] Whoever is afflicted with poverty and refers it to the people, his poverty will not be brought to an end, but whoever refers it to Allah, Allah will grant him provision, sooner or later.

Action Items for the uttaqun: Owing money to your Muslim brother due to a business transaction is a no-no. Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!
