EL-AUR GREYHOUNDS

El-Aur Greyhounds was founded by me, Laurel Drew, in 1967 although I didn't actually know I was doing it at the time.  What I thought I was doing was rescuing a greyhound from the dog pound until I could find him a home.  He turned out to be my own first greyhound, the first of many to come.  "He" was a fawn, unregistered, stubborn, loving cuddler by the name of Sheikh, who would become the very first greyhound ever to earn the Utility Degree in obedience--Sheikh, UD.

In 1970, I acquired my first show greyhound, a puppy of Aroi breeding who was the start of my show ring experiences.  Frolic of Aroi, known as Folly, was my foundation bitch and a wonderful dog.  Her first litter produced Ch. El-Aur Aztec CDX TD FCh, my most titled greyhound who was awarded the Versatility title by the Greyhound Club of America.  Parker as he was known (short for Parking Lot Puppy as he was born in the parking lot at the vet's office!) was one of the most sweet tempered dogs that ever lived.  He was also the first greyhound to earn a Tracking Degree.

Through these dogs, I became an ardent coursing fan and we hunted lots of jackrabbits back in those days.  We discovered lure coursing, and I've been active in that as well as the obedience and conformation rings ever since.

In 1996, I became involved in greyhound adoption when a friend and I decided to help out a litter we heard about.  These pups were from an accidental breeding and were about to be put down as a result.  We drove to Dodge City, Kansas to meet a lady from Nebraska who had rescued the pups, and so the first Greyhound Rescue Runs (later GUR or Greyhound Underground Railway) began.  Elaine and I formed the 'A Place For Us Greyhound Adoption and Rescue' group shortly thereafter and have been finding homes for greyhounds ever since.

In order to further support the group, I began donating a portion of the proceeds of each pedigree that I research for dogs to A Place For Us Greyhound Adoption.  My pedigrees, either 5 generation or 8 generation, are an effort to help people find out more about their dogs and the history of the greyhound in general.  They are done under the aegis of El-Aur Enterprises.  I also do genealogy research for humans.

In addition to all of this, I write articles for various magazines, particularly Celebrating Greyhounds Magazine in which I do a regular column on racing greyhounds which have be inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in Abilene, Kansas.
