Eating After Surgery

Stage One: (Two weeks post-op) Clear liquids. Unsweetened, or sweetended with a sugar substitute. Jell-o (sugar free), broth, SF juice bars (popsicles). This allows time for the incisions inside to heal. 1 oz every 15 minutes while awake to approx 6-8 cups daily. Minimal calories.

Stage Two: (Two to three weeks post clear fluids) Pureed foods: As great a variety of foods as possible, with the majority being protein, then veggies, then carbs. Meat is not tolerated well at this stage, so alternate means of protein are recommended. (Protein supplements, beans, etc.) All food must be of baby food consistency, with NO lumps, seeds, strings etc. 2 oz, 5-6 times a day. Approx 100-250 cals. Begin vitamin supplemets at this stage as directed.

Stage Three: (Once cleared by doctor) Regular calorie controlled diet: Gradually add new foods to see if they are tolerated, one food per day. Food intolerances may be permanent or temporary, try foods again later if not tolerated now. Maintain balanced diet. Gradually increase meal size to 4-5 oz and reduce frequency to 3 meals per day. Continue to drink 6-8 cups of low calorie fluids between meals.

Here is a sample menu, to give you an idea of the actual quantity of food.

Sample Menu (Beginning of Stage 3)

Meal 1: 7:00 am: 1 scrambled egg, 1-2 tsp. diet margarine, 1/2 cup dilute (50/50) orange juice

Meal 2: 10:00 am: 1/2 pkt SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, 1/2 cup skim milk with 2 tsp powdered milk stirred in

Meal 3: 1:00 pm: 1/2 c pastina, 1 oz cubed chicken, 2 tsp diet margarine, 1/2 c steamed carrots

Meal 4: 4:00 pm: 1/4 c whipped cottage cheese, 1 cup diced pears in juice

Meal 5: 7:00 pm: 1 oz poached salmon, 1/2 c cubed boiled potatoes, 2 tsp diet margarine, 1/2 c spinach

Meal 6: 10:00 pm: 2 Tbs low fat creamy PB, 6 saltine crackers, 1/2 c SF, Fat free yogurt
