Writing Fiction Techniques and
Tips:
For years I collected links on
writing. And then a frustrating thing happened, my favorites
folder becameunorganized and impossible to navigate. I could
find anything. So, like any good Pooh-Bear, I put on mythinking cap
-- and this website is the result. Now, every time my favorites
folder becomes unwieldy, thepages here grow. I've recently updated
them again and at this point, I can truthfully say that there
are links covering all areas of writing, from starting that first
novel to finding an agent. I hope they help you as much as they've
helped me over the years.
If this isn't your first visit, you'll find I split the
writing research page into seperate pages. The directions these pages grow
is an interesting way for me to track my research.
You'll find my research has taken some odd turns in the
last six months. There's a lot of new stuff in medical, guns and ghosts.
A weird combination...
My
Favorite Writing Tips:
I'm a panster --
and this tip is especially for those who, like me, write by the seat
of their pants, rather than creating an outline before they sit
down. As you begin your book make a list of the important ideas to
keep yourself in line: Character's fatal flaw, inner conflict, outer
conflict, inner goal, outer goal, motivation, as well as the novel's
core idea and put all this information in the header of the
document. It will help the plot on track.
Before you begin to work on that all important
synopsis slot the main plotting points of your MS into the hero's
jouney outline. This will help easily pinpoint the major plot-points
that need to be touched on. This also works well with the W plot.
Always ask why and then make sure the answer's
included on paper.
Conflict is what moves the plot forward --
include it on every single page.
