Rant and Rave
ABOUT THE WEBMASTER;  I grew up in the Port Hawkesbury area of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a very progressive town after the completion of the Canso Causeway. After graduating from high school,  I moved to Moncton, New Brunswick where I spent the better part of eight years. I was employed with CIBC, trained and worked in financial services and had my own hosiery line..

I have resided in Amherst area for 25 years where I have worked for a housing construction company on a number of local single and multiple unit housing projects. I was employed in the Federal Public Service with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs taking courses in Public Service Finance and Accounting, CPR and First Aid and was on the executive of the Departmental Women's Advisory Committee, a group to assist women in eductating themselves in personal and business matters such as legal and financial. I have worked with women's groups such as NS Advisory Council on the Status of Women to open opportunities and effect changes in practises governing the position of women in the family and society, socially and legally. I was houseparent to vocational students from the Atlantic Provinces School for the Hearing Handicapped, taught computer operation to St. Charles School students, grades 4-6, and adults, on a one on one basis, was on the board of Directors of Crimestoppers and Amherst Boy Scouts Group Committee.

In retrospect, I feel that the most important accomplishment in my life  has been the raising of my two children to be respectful, responsible, educated adults. They are both productive young people with a variety of interests including computers, horseback riding, boating and skiing.

I have been involved in finance and accounting for about 30 years and computer operation for the past 20 years, keeping up to date with  new technology and accounting practices and new methods and laws in taxation. I played and sang locally as part of the duel "Mac and Diddy", have played and assisted in organizing local fund raising benefits.

I am presently employed with an international company providing customer service in technology and billin

VLT Gambling in Nova Scotia

Video Lottery Terminals are now auto shut down now at 12:00 Midnight in Nova Scotia. . Regardless of how I feel about our freedoms being eroded, there IS a tendency for people to be more intoxicated by alcohol in these late hours and drinkng and gambling are NOT really a good combination. Congratulations to the government of NS, they have done a good thing!

We have heard the horror stories of those who have indebted themselves to and beyond their financial limits to feed a gambling habit.  Apparently there are no limits on the timeframe for those people any more then there are limits on their wallets and credit cards.  We could perceive that those people have an issue which delves much deeper than their gambling habits. This type of behaviour can be associated with greed and the need for power and control.

Perhaps the NS government should offer a course in gambling which emphasizes the "gaming" aspect and minimizes the "win" factor. After all, for the players, VLT gambling IS entertainment and the "gambling corporation" and provincial governments  are the only real winners.

"SENSE OF COMMITMENT"

I have had real concerns about the sense of commitment people have and how it affects those around them. It appears that we have evolved into a non committed society with an almost necessary attitude that "anything can change at any time."

People are changing jobs, homes, partners and politics at a staggering rate searching for a better life, more affluence, more convenience, more security. For the most part, we are living on promises, and the promises are only as true and secure as those who make them.

For those of us who are young and mobile it can be quite simple to pack our luggage and move on to another town or home, exciting to find new friends and jobs. For those of us in our middle years who are a bit worn and fragile, broken promises can be devestating.

We are more vulnerable to our environment,  coping with the changes and concessions that are made. It is not easy for us physically or emotionally, to pull stakes and move on.

WE have, no doubt, acquired relationships and friendships and a deep sense of community where we live. Business and personal relationsips can be very important. Our Doctors, lawyers, clergy, even our favorite grocey store or bar can provide us with comfort.

So here we are - vulnerable and fragile, living on promises, listening to the media for promises of good weather or bad weather, stock quotations, speculation and predictions of all sorts. Then we have the politicians, who promise almost anything they think will feed our need for security, not necessarily doing the proper calculations or reseach or considering the  practical application of such promises.

Hopefully those who make the promises to us can be trusted to follow through. Many of the commitments they make are shallow to begin, but when we prepare and adjust for them and they do not happen, this is absolutely irresponsible.

"STUDIES"

I heard an interesting story a couple of weeks ago about studies. Apparently about 6% of studies have any credibility, which does not surprise me, however, over 80% of the population believe them and actually change their lifestyles because of them, yet
laws are written and varied based on them. First of all the studies must be done by a credible person or organization and secondly must be tested in a suitable environment. There have been billions of dollars paid and made on studies, dollars that could be better spent on realities in our society that are more prevalent. It is not hard to figure out at a small fraction of the cost.
The PROVINCE OF NOVA SCOTIA does it again-

We live in a world of technology with innovative means of communications designed to allow us to multitask- blackberries, cell phones, intercoms, laptop computers and 10-4 phones. There are many businesses and individuals who are very reliant on mobile communication devices to keep in touch - the taxi business, the trucking industry, government departments who monitor the highways and biways, police departments, fire departments etc. How does the  government of NS intend to enforce their latest control on the public with this being said?

It never ceases to amaze me how the Province of Nova Scotia seems to be the first to implement stupid rules and regulations to control the public. How about the new vehicle safety inspection regulations which allow a service centre to literally seize an individual's vehicle for several months at the will of the mechanic until the person pays a possibly outrageous bill. Then of course there is the "maintenance enforcement program" in NS which was implemented and became a driving force before the people administrating it even knew what they were doing- itl seems that many of the workers were politically appointed and really had no education or experience in the field.  This program is still in production with errors and ommisions in tact, blatantly doing injustice through the NS and federal justice system. Then there is my favorite-family and children services, a child protection agency supposedly designed to assist families and children to better living, by its very title, many of the workers themselves being products of abuse or never having a child of their own to have any comprehension of family life- subject children and families sometimes being torn apart and at the mercy of the dysfunctional "agency" itself or its counter productive"foster care system".

Well, let us see how the business community and individuals respond to this latest NS government regulation, particularly those who rely on cell phones to stay productive in business.

I wonder how the police will enforce this law without the use of their own cell phones or other mobile communication devices.
