An astonishing number of dogs and cats are put to death every year at animal shelters. Ignorance, incompetence and negligence on our part deal a fate of loneliness, fear and starvation. Eventually these animals die on their own, are shot, poisoned or killed in some other inhumane manner, or if they're lucky, surrendered to a local shelter. At a shelter there's a glimmer of hope for them to become adopted and loved during the remainder of their lives. If it's not "meant to be" for them, at least they are granted a peaceful, painless way out......
I am one of many individuals and organizations who have put their heart (and paycheck) into alleviating the suffering for some of these guys- I rescue (mostly dogs) from an unfair, painful or dangerous life/destiny. The transition period between their old life and their new home grants these dogs the confidence and peaceful recognition that "it's going to be OK."
How can YOU help? Please, ADOPT FROM YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER (even though the name may not suggest it, "Animal Control" is a full-fledged adoption facility staffed with animal lovers). SPAY or NEUTER your pet- we all love puppies and kittens, but it is selfish to let animals be parents when there are so many homeless animals already, many of which are puppies and kittens. And DO NOT SUPPORT PET STORES who sell dogs- these animals are from puppy mills - warehouses in which one female dog is bred to the point of near-death, then killed. The conditions are inhumane- It is not an animal-friendly environment, but a money-making machine, exploiting innocent animals for capital. |
