Perhaps the next best thing however is a item called “THE BUTTKICKER”.  This device is attached or placed under your chair or couch.  It is then connected to the output of your LFE (subwoofer) output, on your receiver via it’s own small amplifier.  In essence it is a speakerless subwoofer sending pure vibrations into and through the chair/couch it is attached to.  Since is a subwoofer you will feel all the vibrations output you L.F.E. channel from the subtle to the large.  This allows the device to work and integrate with music and react to large booms equally.  But does it really work…. Yes!
I viewed several films with this device and found to add an incredible dimension to the viewing experience – not only to action packed sequences but to music as well.
(The opening scene in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA when the chandelier explodes with light is a show stopper.  It unexpectedly causes a jolt causing the viewers to be on edge for the rest of the film.  It added suspense where there was none previous.  My guests vouch in added more of an unsettling effect lifting the film to a higher level not know if or when they would receive another jolt.  In the end it added to the realism of the film and rounding out the experience beyond the musical level and yet opening the soundtrack to that of a live performance.
Excited by this I hoped it would add a bit of what was lost to the SENSERROUND films.  It worked… EARTHQUAKE was once again incredible.  Although the effect doesn’t last long when compared to the film’s length, THE BUTTKICKER rattled my couch and left my body still vibrating after the quake subsided.  As in the theatrical presentation it’s the sudden lack of the effect after being on for a few minuets which leaves an effect on the viewer – a kind of relief after the earthquake, sonic, visual and vibratory.
