Columbia, province, SW Canada, bounded on the North by Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, on the East by Alberta, on the
South by the states of Montana, Idaho, and Washington, and on the West by the Pacific Ocean and Alaska. The crest of the Rocky Mountains forms the
South portion of the East Boundary. The province includes Vancouver
Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands of the West coast.
British Columbia became part of the Confederation of Canada on July 20, 1871, as the sixth province. British Columbia has many natural resources
such as mineral reserves, forests, fisheries, which provide for a growing manufacturing economy. Scenic and recreational attractions have made
British Columbia a popular tourist area. The province was named for the Columbia
River, which originates there and flows South across the border to the U.
S.
