Unity and Nature of the Alliance

It is a broad and loose network of organizations and individuals united to campaign for the defense of people’s rights and national patrimony amidst the wholesale plunder of our mineral and other natural resources.

It unites on the following basis:

  • Defense of the national patrimony
  • Scrapping of RA 7942 or Philippine Mining Act of 1995
  • Adoption and support of local mining campaign
  • Development of a pro-people and pro-environment mining policy

Unity among member organizations and individuals is based on the principles of goodwill and solidarity, cooperation and consensus, and independence and initiative.

Convenors of the Alliance

This group is composed of representatives of initiating organizations who shall convene and steer the alliance, formulate a general and coordinated campaign, and form relevant task forces.

Objectives

  1. Unite and consolidate the broadest possible opposition to the Arroyo Administration’s mining revitalization program and gather the biggest support for the scrapping of Mining Act of 1995.
  2. Expose the interlocking vested interests of the Arroyo Administration, the local mining elite, mining TNCs, and international financing institutions (IFIs) - International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), World Trade Organizations (WTO) behind the liberalization of the mining industry in the country.
  3. Expose the effects and impacts of mining liberalization and corporate mining operation on the people and the environment.

  4. Expose and oppose all policies of the government regarding mining liberalization such as the Mineral Action Plan and DENR Administrative Orders.
  5. Generate the broadest possible support for a genuine people’s mining policy  (that may include an alternative law) that captures and promotes common principles and perspectives of the alliance on how mining should be developed in the Philippines.
  6. Support local campaign and struggles of mining affected communities.
