A BRIEF INSECTGIRL HISTORY......

Insectgirl formed in Ballarat in early 1997 as the new band for former members of the legendary Boxing Tostados, vocalist Stella Savy and keyboard player, Dean Shannon.
Their original music brings together a number of rhythmic styles such as funk, soul, reggae and hip hop.
Savy and Shannon - who still live in Ballarat, despite doing most of their work in Melbourne - also write the band’s material. They are joined by Melbourne musicians, Adam Conte (ex-Funken Wagnells) on guitar, bassist Andrew “Vinnie” Vincent (formerly of Treehouse and African band, Matata Sound), as well as superb ex-Sydney drummer, Ric McCann.
Insectgirl played its first gig in Ballarat’s Bridge Mall Inn in February ‘97, and has since played around Melbourne venues like the Empress of India, the Punters Club, Nicholson’s and the Cherry Tree, with an ongoing regular spot at the Rochester Castle. Last year the band also did three very successful outdoor performances in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, for the 1997 Fringe Festival. The band has built a strong following at Ballarat’s Bridge Mall Inn, and Hepburn’s Palais Theatre. On July 25, they headlined a live internet broadcast of three bands from the Bridge Mall Inn.

Sexy eyes!!!

Insectgirl won the Forte sponsored ‘Best New Band’ award at the Ballarat Independent Music Awards in 1997, and are one of 12 bands selected for this year’s Melbourne Funk Festival, from 250 bands Australia-wide. This summer Insectgirl has been booked for Melbourne’s Chapel Street Festival and Fringe Festival.

DI=DIY [Do It - equals - Do It Yourself]
The band played ‘live’ in the studio, recording everything in one or two takes and overdubbing vocals and some percussion. Produced by Bomba in conjunction with the band members, the tracks attempt to capture the energetic groove on which Insectgirl is quickly building its live reputation. Six of those recordings form DI=DIY, and the track, Double Adapter will also appear on a compilation CD of bands which originated in Ballarat.

Insectgirl's new CD

Original grooving tunes with straight talkin' lyrics . Dean's music has become popular with all the audiences that turn up over and again at Insectgirl live gigs. The commitment of their live performances is reproduced here. Funk, soul, reggae and hip hop influences combine in this seriously dance provoking music. Dig it, take that shit (if you want) and don't hurt noone.

A great Picture of Dean Shannon going hard in Brisbane, Australia.

Please note the shaved head (which makes Dean look like he is in the mafia) is only for show, and he is not into any illegal activities.

DOUBLE ADAPTER:
I need you to be flex-able. Why don’t you do a dance on the table? Some cats told me you’ve swung both ways, tell me do you still behave the same these days? So you can be my double, double adapter./ Come on baby and sit on the tap. I can’t waist time just chewin’ on the fat so come here and bend over, so you can see right over my shoulder. And you can be my double, double adapter./ Theres lots of people done it before us. No need to make such a fuss, so come here and bend over, please baby before we get older. And you can be my double, double adapter.

HAPPENS ALL THE TIME:
Some people see the world as made up of boys and girls and deny that the real world’s not just straight, but don’t you know better than that way?/ CHORUS Think about the way you live. Make yourself the one who’s different. Don’t just say it happens all the time./ What gives a man the right to influence another’s life so they see the world not as it is. Judging a life, judging another’s life against his./ CHORUS/ And if you still have friends who hate the fact that some people just aren’t straight, they’ll just hold you back so leave them all behind and move on up, move on up your mind./ CHORUS.
  happens all the time

TEMPTED:
I must admit I’m tempted by an offer I’ve received. it has to do with boys and girls, and curiosity. It has to do with admiration of a mutual degree. it has to do with sharing beds in Queen Victoria street./ CHORUS I want you to tell me all the things you see when you’re lying in your bed and my name comes into your head. You could be sittin there alone where you and her call home, and then you look at your TV and theres someone looks like me./ I put this song together to change the status quo. So far I’ve been tentative, but fuck it baby lets go. Tell me all about yourself and who you want to be, and then were going to move it on, you’re gonna talk about me.

FLINEY:
I walked the street the other week, on my feet to the funky beat. i caught your eye you came and said, ‘Hi’ What do you wanna talk about? Don’t know, i guess i thought you were sex. I don’t know what to say./ CHORUS/ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your name?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, an i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your sex?’/ You’re telling me your problems that i don’t understand. You say the shit has gone down, then hit the fan. You tell me about your brother, your sister and your aunt. One is sick, the other died, the other just don’t care./ CHORUS/ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your name?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, an i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your sex?’/ If none of this rings true to you, it’s gonna happen one day soon. They’ll get to you. They’ll beg and pleed, get on their knees, ask you for eternity. But you don’t wanna be an enemy. / CHORUS/ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your name?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your number?’ Then you said, ‘Hey, can i get your sex?’

FALL:
It’s cold out, out you go, knock on my bedroom window. Get up, come with me. It’s dark and no-one can see. Pull on my trousers in the early hours. There go Mum’s flowers./ CHORUS If I must fall, I’d rather fall with you and determine my own destiny. Why be what they want me to be?/ They think we’re naughty, but we’re just young and horny. We do it for hours, never mind the flowers. They say you’ll lead me into hell and misery, but I know better./ CHORUS If I must fall, I’d rather fall with you and determine my own destiny. Why be what they want me to be?/ A quick one in the bushes in behind the butchers. Goodnight, back to bed. Thankyou for the head. Quite good as leisure and relieves the pressure. It’s been a pleasure.

NEW FUNK DISCO:
Started out in funky Ballarat, Happening destination for the new hippy cats, Freaks are walkin’ right above the ground, So we took some inspiration from the freedom that we found. Still we feel the ignorance out there. People still judge people by the style of their hair. Think a little deeper and you’ll find, the only real difference is in the mind. CHORUS Anything man has done can be done. What’s the use of money if you ain’t having fun. Jealous people don’t want you to see that you can be the person that you want to be. First of all you have to understand, Never has been violence that makes a man. Nor has it been fear that makes a girl, so find your drug, get some love, and trippers see the world. If you wanna take drugs that’s alright, just don’t hurt yourself. If you wanna make love trippers that’s fine, but don’t hurt no-one else. And if you just free up your mind, then you would see that all good things are possible. Anything man has done can be done. What’s the use of money if you ain’t having fun. Jealous people don’t want you to see that you can be the person that you want to be.
