Seminars April 2005 :(dates & venues now confirmed)

  • London RC: Tuesday 5 April, 8pm
  • Danesfield Club, Medmenham: Monday 11 April, 8pm

  • New Umpiring candidates for 2005: [new info]
  • The 2004 candidates have now completed their course & the 2005 course has now started, but  the details are still below, so if you're interested for the future, please contact the Hon Secretary now.
  • 2004 start of training meeting:
    • Time:   8 pm
    • Date:  Monday 19th January
    • Venue:  London RC, Embankment, Putney.
  • New Umpires Required
    • The Thames Region needs some new Umpires. Umpiring is a very good way for former competitors to remain involved in the sport. All Multi-lane and International Umpires start by taking their region's course Will you come and join us?
    • The training for each year tends to start in January or early February, & for 2004 training see above, and you could be a fully qualified Umpire before the end of the Regatta season.
    • There was a new syllabus in 2002  and the training is practically based with qualification based upon continuous assessment.  One of the planned rule changes from April 2004 will allow trainees to officiate (including starting & race umpiring) under supervision.
    • We can take up to ten candidates for this year.
    • To find out more contact: John Biddle at Burway, Nigel Smith at London, John Robson at Thames, Bill Mitchell at Thames Tradesmen's or your local Umpire (or contact the TRUC webmaster).
      • It is necessary to have rowed or sculled to Umpire, but not at the highest level. [The webmaster thinks that coxes also make good umpires, but he would say that, wouldn't he!]
      • Are there any aspirant HRR or International Umpires out there who want to or need to start down the road to full blazerati this year? Similarly any new regatta or HORR organisers who should get a licence.
      • We must close the lists soon or the full syllabus will not happen.
      • Application forms are available from John Robson.
      • All candidates must have a sponsoring club, regatta or tame umpire.
    • Notes for Potential candidates
    • Syllabus [but note that some details of the timetable are subject to change]
    • Rather than just reading what the TRUC have to say, perhaps you'd like to see the candidate's eye view?   Richard Packer has included a link to his training diary 2000 (as well as an unofficial summary of umpiring flag signals), from his rowing page. It can't have been too bad, because his wife was a candidate (successfully) the following year.  [Note that the details of the training timetable have changed a little since 2000.]
