What's new at the park? Aug 17, 2008 Four Least Bitterns including juveniles were located in the SW corner. June 15, 2008 A family of Hooded Mergansers were located in the SW corner of the park. May 15, 2008 Sandhill Cranes successfully nested and fledged two young in the SW corner of Phase I. |

FALL BIRD HIKE Saturday, September 20, 2008 8:00 - 10:00 am Ages 6-adult Join a naturalist for some early morning birding and learn why Crosswinds Marsh is one of the most popular birding destinations in Wayne County. The naturalist will lead you down the scenic trails through meadows, forests and marsh wetlands. Come and observe some of the 200+ species of birds known to frequent the marsh. Please bring binoculars, bird book, and comfortable shoes; a limited number of binoculars are available to borrow. |

Directions to Crosswind Marsh: Take Interstate 275 South to Will-Carleton Road (Exit #8). Take Will-Carleton Road West 3.5 miles to Haggerty Road. Take Haggerty Road 1/2 mile North to park entrance on the West side of the road. Park hours: Open from dawn until dusk. Park Description: Crosswinds Marsh is a 1,000 acre wetland/wildlife preserve which offers a variety of outdoor activities. Crosswinds offers seven miles of hiking trails, canoe rentals, fishing, picnic areas, 4.5 miles of horseback riding trails, and 4.5 miles of cross-country ski trails. Trail maps are available at the parking lot. It was created in 1993 by flooding a farmland that was originally a marsh. It is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country. It was made to replace wetlands used to expand the Detroit Metro Airport. It has a normal surface area of 467 acres and attracts a large variety of waterfowl during migration. The park has one of the most easily viewed and photographed Bald Eagles nest in SE Michigan. The nest is visible from either Haggerty road or the parking lot. |
