NICARAGUAN CITIES AND TOWNS

I decided to start with the cities/departments (in Nicaragua, a department is a state or province) section so that there's a better understanding about the locations. So far, I have in-depth information of 5 departments and the two regions on our Caribbean Coast. I recommend to maximize your browser's window for better visualization and to surf the section as it was designed.

Nicaragua, located in Central America, has an extention of almost 130,000 km2
(similar to the size of New York State) of which, more than 10,000 km2 belong to bodies of water (mainly by the Cocibolca & Managua Lakes). It's divided into 15 departments and 2 autonomous regions adding a total of 151 counties. Our Pacific Coastline is 305 km long while the Caribbean one is 450 km. The most important cities, after the capital, are: León, Granada, Matagalpa, Puerto Cabezas and Bluefields. Now, let's check them out.

Managua, the capital cityFirst stop will be the capital city,
Managua. It's been the capital for more than 151 years and during this period, it has suffered prosperity as well as devastation. Check out the sightseeings and learn about the extremely important archeology site it possesses.

San Juan del Sur Bay, RivasThen we go south to
Rivas, a department with a very promising future, at least economically speaking. It offers almost a complete pack to its visitors: from virgin beaches to volcano tourism; From hiking to surfing and adventure to archeology.

Masaya (left), famous for its volcano and local artisans, but there are other amazing natural beauties and interesting places to visit. Check them all out.

Now, we go back into the colonial times and visit the former capital,
León City (down-left). This city is mostly known for its rich past, but León also enjoys volcano-tourism and possesses some beautiful beaches.

We continue in the colonial times and tour the oldest city in the American continent,
Granada (down-middle) and its eco-tourism and adventure sites.

To wrap things up, it'll be Nicaragua's East Coast (above-right). This region of the country is totally different to the rest. Learn more about our Afro-Caribbean culture and check out some of the most virgin places in the country.

In addition, I created a page where visitors can find out a department's, city's, town's or municipality's anniversary: anniversaries.
