The Online Resource for PBEM Adventurers in the Grim World of Darklands!

  • No need to apply for lurker status.  Read the ongoing story of our valiant heroes in the GM Post Archive.
  • Read the I wanna play Darklands section at the bottom of this page if you want to learn more about applying to play.
  • If you'd like to add a character to the world of Darklands (player or lurker), read the Creating a Darklander section of the site.  Some of you might not have the time to play but might be interested in contributing to the game in this way.  A great shoe-in to the game if a vacancy arises.
  • There is a section of tips and guidelines for writing and submitting posts.  Read this section before requesting to play.  Darklands Pbem style isn't for everyone.

Darklands is a play-by-email dramatic role-playing game where a variety of adventurers interact in a grim fantasy world, seeking to thwart and destroy the dark forces of evil.

The Rules of Play. Everything you need (or don't need) to know to play.

Site Updates

July 2, 2001 (Monday)

My first posts are now in the GM Post Archive.  And we're off!

June 30, 2001 (Saturday)

A historic moment!  The four finalists have been chosen to be the first players of Darklands.  The new player characters have been posted for your viewing pleasure under the Characters section of the site.  The first four players are great writers with impressive lists of previous gaming and writing experience, so be prepared to be wowed and addicted as the game gets under way.

June 24, 2001 (Sunday)

Changes already?  Yeah, crazy I know.  Anyway, the format of this page is hopefully easier to follow.  Also, the overview in the Creating a Darklander section has changed and the description of Darklands has been beefed-up a bit.  Enjoy!

June 23, 2001 (Saturday)

Before creating a character, and maybe even before reading the rules on character creation, you should go to the Character Descriptions.  There is a sample character there named Feldebar.  This will give you an idea of the final product you are trying to dream up during the creation process.

I wanna play Darklands...

Sorry, there are currently no openings for player characters.  However, submitting a character (for posting as an NPC for example) puts you ahead of the game if any openings arise, or if I start looking for people to play various non-player roles.

What do I have to do if I want to play?
I won't have time to respond to lots of emails.  So, if you want to play, think of the list below as an RPG resume.  Here's what you need to email me:

  1. A fantastically well-thought out and completed character.  Use the guidelines in the Creating a Darklander section and the flavour of the Grim World of Adventure section.

  2. A writing sample (what!?#!) Yeah, I know... But this is a play-by-email game.  If you're not a proficient and creative writer, you won't enjoy the game anyway.  Write up a sample post of about 200 - 300 words (whatever length you want really).  The sample should be a short scene your character has found him/herself in.  You decide.

  3. A little bit about yourself.  Include your first name and an email address (specify an address that you don't mind having posted on the site.  Create a free address at hotmail or yahoo if necessary).  More importantly, what RPG's you've played before, what you play now, any thoughts on RPG's - your philosophy of game-play.

  4. Answer this question clearly in your email with a yes or no:
"If you aren't selected as player, do you want your character posted on the site anyway?"

Player (and Lurker) submissions will be chosen based on the quality of (a) their character and how they invoke the imagination, (b) how well their character fleshes out the world of Darklands without backing the concept into an irreversible corner, (c)how well they write, and (d) how committed they will be to posting regularly.

If you want to see the high quality you're competing with, have a read through the current player characters.

In any event, enjoy the rest of the site!
