A Comedy adventure in which two young men set out on a thousand mile journey
in a small, stolen, yellow mini.
One of the greatest New Zealand movies ever made
and a personel favorite.
Goodbye Pork Pie
was released in 1981.
This is a story from the pages of history, from an almost forgotten age,
The good old days when you could drive you car when ever you pleased,
when petrol stations were always open and gas was less than a buck a gallon.

The story starts in Kaitia Spring, 1978 when a 19 year old Jerry Austin
finds a wallet with some cash & a drivers licence. He uses the license
to obtain a brand new 1978 yellow mini. Leslie Morris was the name on the
licence. 'Just call me Lez' says Jerry to the car rental girl. Meanwhile John
is traveling over the old Manakau bridge in a Holden HQ taxi, with the new
Manakau bridge in the background under construction, trying to convince his
partner of 6 years not to leave him & head back home to Invercargil.

The next day John decides to head to Invercargil to try & get her back.
As he walks out of the Auckland bus station intending on thumbing a ride he
sees Jerry being questiond by a traffic officer for not wearing his seatbelt.
John helps Jerry get off with a warning so he offers him a ride down the road.
Jerry stops at Pokeno Motors to fill up with gas & then offers john a
ride further down the road.
'Waw, did'nt pay for...you did'nt pay for the juice,
You did'nt pay for the juice' says Jerry
'You didnt pay for the juice' replys John
'I didnt pay for the juice' says Jerry
'I didnt pay for the juice' says John
'We didnt pay for the juice'!!!
yeeeeeeeeeeehhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Down the road outside the Huntly Power Station the pick up Shirl hitchhiking.
'He's queer & I'm driving',
says Jerry has they pull over for her. 'I bet ya 2 bucks i'm hanging out
of her by the time we reach Wanganui' says Jerry to John while waiting for
Shirl with the burgers when they stop for a feed. They collect flags on their
wild journey for the car aeiral, back in a time when the speed limit on the
open road was still 80Kph.

Further down the road they are chased by an officer on a motorcycle to
Smash Palace, the venue for another great New Zealand movie staring Bruno
Laurence. Jerry is 'hanging out of Shirl' as they hide amongst the cars at
smash palace. Apon arrival at Kowhai Park, Wanganui, Shirl decides she wants
to go to Wellington. They drop shirl off in Welly & then head to one of
Johns old railways mates, Mulvayney, played by Bruno Laurence. By this time
Jerry has the nickname Blondini.

'Theres only one sure thing in life Blondini, & thats doubt, I think',
says Mulvayney. They all head to a party where the happen to run into Shirl
again. During a chase through Wellington the next day thay end up in the rail
yards where John's previous experience in the railways gets them & the
mini hidden in a railway carrage & on board the inter island ferry.

'I got an aunty that sees pink elephants',
says Jerry as the sit in their playboy wallpapered rail carrage traveling
through the top of the South Island discussing UFO's.

In Christchurch they have a day free untill they have to get back to the
rail car before it heads to the west coast. Jerry & John sit in the pub
while Shirl goes shopping, & gets nabbed.

'Hear that hooter, I'm gonna get me one of those.'
and Jerry does just that, stealing the horn off the front of a train he
fastens it to the top of the mini, which by now is pretty near being just
the shell of the car as they have been selling parts off the car along the
way to help fund the trip. The horn proves to be an excelent device for moving
police officers in a hurry.

'We're taking this bloody car to Invercargil'

The shell of the yellow mini gets John to Invercargil where his partner
is sitting watching Close To Home, & is pleased to see him.

This year is the 21st birthday of the release of

It was the first New Zealand film to cover its costs from the domestic market
alone.
