the followin' page is just a blurp about wrestling from my point of view
me- 5'5" 144lbs (which puts me in the 69kg weight class) can leg press at least 475lbs (haven't tried any more than that) can't bench very much though, can take a beatin' and keep wrestling, extremely flexible which allows for easy getaways and i've been told i have a very intimidating stance (which works out great for me).
my background-I've been wrestlin' for three years now, and i'm now coachin' my high school's team. I do freestyle wrestlin' and hope to actually continue to do so as long as possible, maybe even wrestle for SFU (that would be a dream come reality for me). In 1997 i placed first in the island novice, the first and only competition for my grade eight year. In 1998 i placed fourth at the British Columbia Girls Invite held in Campbell River, continuing on with the same season, i placed fourth at the island zone finals and went off the the provincials where i didn't fare as well as i had hoped, but i'm making a comeback this season. In late 1999 i went back to the British Columbia Girls Invite held in Nanaimo and brought home a silver medal. I have had a few dual matches against my high school's rival school- NISS, and am undefeated to any of their female wrestlers (haven't tried their males yet). I went to the islad zone finals and I placed fifth, which again sent me off to the provincials. This year, although I didn't metal, I was quite happy with my results- I'm eighth overall in the province, something i'm quite proud of. my technique- i probably shouldn't be saying what my technique is, just in case i have to wrestle whomever reads this, so i'll keep it short and sweet. I have a tendancy to go straight in for a head and arm throw (my own style of sucking it in though) and bringing my opponent right down to the mat for an easy pin, squeeze the hell outta their head and they can't get away. I prefer the short matches, win or lose, my fastest time was 13.8s for a win and 30 something for a loss (made a mistake that cost me my match, she went for a two leg shooting, and i went for the bum-drag, only problem was, i didn't have it tight enough and she slid out for the pin).
practices- i run practices three times a week, for two hours a pop giving a total of six hours per week for wrestling. I have my own bench press and i usually work out a bit during the week, whenever i find the time. I also encourage a cardio vascular work out, preferably wind sprints, the change of heartbeat and the amount of work done really helps me with my capability to wrestle strong for the time in which i'm given. and i personally enjoy a practice where i wrestle with someone stronger, and heavier than i am, just for the extra practice.
overall- I really enjoy wrestling, and wouldn't be doing it if i didn't. I try to encourage everyone to at least try the sport, it's not as painful as people make it out to be. I've been wrestling for three years and i've never been injured more than a bruise. It doesn't matter if you're male or female because both can compete, just not against each other. Wrestling's finally making a comeback and getting the publicity it deserves. It's a great sport that challenges your strength, ability to bend in ways that Gumby himself would squeal in, and your ability to think and act well under pressure. |
