Currency Converter 2
The Currency Converter 2 is a freeware program to convert between over 200 currencies. You can keep all the exchange rates up-to-date by using the one-button Internet Update-function (with proxy support) to load the Exchange Rates from the Internet.
It requires Win95 with IE4+, or any newer Microsoft Windows operating system.

August 9, 2006 : Small Fixes
Currconv2 hasn't been updated in ages, and it certainly isn't supported software anymore. As such many functions might not work with the latest Windows XP+ versions. Currconv2 however should still be solid on older versions of Windows. If you use CC2 you might have found IMF support was broken. IMF today only reports some 6 orso currencies. I've tried fixing it, but that didn't make much sense.
I've changed IMF support to European Central Bank. If you'd like support for European Central Bank added to your Currency Converter 2 (instead of IMF) download the update file called data.zip.
Close Currconv2. Then just extract the files from the zip archive, and copy them to the data folder of the Currency Converter overwriting the existing IMF files. The data folder is most likely located somewhere like "C:\Program Files\Currconv2\data" and holds files like IMF.XML and IMF.INI. The data.zip file also contains updated versions of IMF.XML and IMF.INI only they work with the European Central Bank. So overwrite the existing files with the ones from the data.zip file you just downloaded.
When you now open Currconv2 again, you should see mentions of European Central Bank and rates updated on August 9, 2006. If you do not, something went wrong. Check to make sure you really extract files to the currconv2\data folder and not to currconv2\data\data which is a common mistake in this case.
I did some testing to see if the rates got read correctly, and it looked OK, but I didn't do a whole lot of it. So, at first, keep an eye on the results - don't accept it blindly - until you feel more comfortable with the changes.
December 23, 2003 : Currconv 2.3.1 updated
Due to some errors in both the miniworld program and packaging, I've repackaged the Currency Converter 2.3.1 with an updated miniworld program. (version 1.0.4) Get the new 2.3.1 release now!
October 14, 2003 : Currconv 2.3.1
Another fix to keep Pacific Commerce going. This solution does however break compatibility with older Pacific HTML Commerce files. Get the latest version now!
As added information, the webmaster of Pacific might not know that table-rows in HTML could do with an end tag </tr> as well.
April 5, 2003 : Currconv 2.3
A new fix for the error with the new Pacific Commerce page. Get the latest version now!
December 1, 2002 : Currconv Crashes / Pacific Errors
The Pacific UBC currency source seems to be offline. This causes the Currency Converter to crash. Not very severely, but it does "blue screen" after which it closes the program. I am not sure what has happened with Pacific.
As I can't free up the time now to do some real thing about it - and seeing as nobody is paying me to do so :o), I'd advise to use online sources until the the errors get fixed. You could use sources like
OANDA and Bloomberg.
September 28, 2002 : Pacific "Error" Update
Pacific updated its currency-rate sources a while ago. This means that you might have
had some non-correct (being old) rates in your conversions. Some currencies might even
have appeared twice. I've now posted the fix (or solution) to the problem.
I've reposted all the files on download to include this fix. I've also packaged the fix
itself for you to download. This is the better option if you have version 2.21 already. The file is an update only. It is a zip-file, with in it the new Pacific.XML. Overwrite your current Pacific.XML file located in the data subdirectory of the Currency Converter 2. This should fix the Pacific problem, it does however also delete your preferred currency settings for Pacific.
If this reads to complicated then: Uninstall the currency converter program, download the currconv 2.21 from the download page, and reinstall. This should fix the Pacific problem.
July 13, 2002 : CC2.21
I've mirrored this page at Geocities, at http://www.geocities.com/currconv2.
I've repackaged all the updates into a neat Currency Converter 2.21 bundle! Get the installer at the download page.
April 17, 2002 : A small update
I've had an increasing number of reports about the export function not exporting in the preferred currency.
I fixed this error, and made available a small update.
You'll have to unzip the executable to a working installation of Currency Converter 2.2, overwriting
the existing currconv2.exe file.
I'll repackage this update, with the updated miniworld converter (see Nov 17 news-item)
and release a new version soon.
If you have any questions, or discover any new (or old) bugs, you
can e-mail me at currconv2 at yahoo dot com.
November 17, 2001 : XP-News + Mini-Update
I've had reports of succesful usage of the Currency Converter on Windows XP. If you are having trouble updating
the currencies with the Currency Converter, make sure you run version 2.2. Earlier versions might give errors.
The Mini World Converter can now use HotKeys! This means you can assign a keyboard-shortcut to the program
that makes the converting-window pop-up. The update is now available.
Extract the contents of the zip-file in the directory of the Currency Converter 2. This is most likely
c:\program files\currency converter 2\ overwriting the existing files. In the zip is also
a small manual in a subdirectory, so you are well advised to make sure that gets extracted correctly
as well using subdirectories. This update is not a stand-alone program and can only be used as update.
The Currency Converter 2.2 download package does not yet include this update of the mini-world converter.
If you download CC2.2 then make sure you download this update as well.
September 14, 2001 : News
PC Welt ran a nice little article about the
CurrConv and made the program available on the CD-ROM that comes with the magazine. If you
come near a copy of PC Welt #10/2001 or if you live in Germany, be sure to buy yourself a copy
of PC Welt.
August 15, 2001 : News + Mini-Update
A slightly updated mini-converter (313kb) is available, now with alphabetically ordered currency lists.
Also, I've repackaged the version 2.2 to show the correct version number in the about-window :) and with
the updated mini-converter.
Full sources of Currency Converter 2.2 are available online.
What is left on the to-do list for the future?
- Program parameter (or separate program) for only updating currencies.
- Export to Excel and such with selectable default-currency (now defaults to Euro or Dollar.)
- MultiLingual interface. Had an offer to translate to Greek.
- PDB currency file export for a Palm converter.
- IMF seems to mis-label: MXN (should be MXP) and PLN (should be PLZ.)
- Implement different other sources. Russian Bank, European Central Bank, and
some other urls sent to me.
- An easy to print function to generate take-with-you lists for on holidays,
listing 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 units and converted values.
- Always on top switches for mini-converter and undocked converter.
- Make the right field in world-window correctly editable (like with mini-world.)
- restore focus of MDI-windows (world, preferred) on reloading the program.
- Write a manual-paragraph about using the cross-converter window.
- Find someone to continue coding on currency converter.
If you feel one or more of the points above are something you'd like to do, you are
very welcome indeed to download a copy of the sources and add to the program. If you need
any additional help about anything related to coding on the currency converter, please ask at currconv2 at yahoo dot com.
Seeing as though I've basically spent the time I can spend on this program,
and as I don't actually *use* the Windows operating system on a daily basis,
any contribution to continue development of this program is welcome.
July 15, 2001 : Release 2.2
The update procedure just got a little bit smoother...
Version 2.2 (re)introduces the threaded / non blocking updates. This means you can
continue to use the program while it is doing the internet traffic for the update.
This version also packages the June 18 IMF Update.
Check out the downloads-section now!
Please uninstall the previous version before installing this version.
May 19, 2001 : Release 2.1
After 2 years and 5 months the Converter-line made it to version 2.1, released as of today.
I'd like to give a big Thank You! to Jeff and to all who e-mailed me their ideas and bug-reports. They make it as user-friendly as it is today.
Most errors should be ironed out by now, and source code will be available online soon as well.
So, what's new you wonder?
- New and separate Mini World Converter program.
- New and improved export routines. Excel, CSV, Javascript and your files!
- Value to convert automatically gets selected on opening window.
- Redesigned the update (page fetch) routines.
- Removed bugs from: Preferred-settings Window
- Removed bugs from: proxy-support (on new update-routines)
I am however sad to report that threaded updating (so you can continue to work while updating the currencies) had to temporarily be removed in favor of stability. It will hopefully be returned soon.
Check out the downloads-section now!
March 24, 2001 : Release 2.03
There it is... A brand new (still somewhat beta) version of the Currency Converter. The past few weeks I've rewritten large amounts of CurrConv 2 to make it more memory-efficient and better documented.
I did however skip out on adding a whole lot of new thingies, it's basically more of the same - just better, I hope.
Due to the large amounts of new code in the project, this release is sort of a BETA release. So if you really need something you know will work, use the 2.02
- if you like to help and test the latesst-and-hopefullyy-greatest, give the 2.03 a test and let me know all about the things you find.
So, what has changed?
- Improved memory usages - smaller footprint. (which is A Good Thing)
- User Authentication (if it works still) info now doesn't save to file anymore.
- No more readln-abort errors (i hope) due to completely new Internet-Update routines.
- Loads of c++ comments throughout the source-code to get you coding quickly.
Check out the executable- and source-downloads now!
As allways, use caution when using new software. This means to not just trust everything the program says but to verify the results.
October 12, 2000 : Proxy bug
If you, using Pacific, get this error:
"Fetched document not a correct Pacific-Sourse HTML -file. HTML Title:PACIFIC -Policy Analysys Computing amp;Information Facility In Commerce"
Then you've experienced the proxy-bug.
Get the new 2.02 debug now!
October 8, 2000 : Release 2.02
While running low on time for freeware-coding, I managed to release version 2.02, fixing the IMF update-bug after they - AGAIN - changed their HTML-layout.
September 16, 2000 : Version 2.01 released.
Currency Converter 2.01 is now available for download.
Improvements include: improved NT4/2000 compatibility, better decoding of HTML (and error-handling thereof), some bug-fixes, and IMF support for both old and current IMF-html pages.
I'd like to thank four users that helped track and solve the NT-error. A big Thank You! to: Mike, Dave, Thomas and Derek.
Now, hurry to the download-page to get yourself a free copy!
