Legolas' Quiver Straps
Hello, and welcome to this page, dedicated to the dissection of Legolas' Lothlorien quiver straps through careful ogling, er, examination of everyone's favorite elf, all strapped up in leather. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it me. (Ooh! Me! Meee!!) Click on the thumbnails and they will (hopefully) take you to larger, most likely blurrier pictures and further, more confusing construction notes. For additional quiver construction notes and patterns, please check out http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Elf/Legolas/Kit.htm on the best LotR costuming site on the web. Enjoy, and I hope this is helpful!
First of all... how the straps wrap around Leggy. Pretty obvious stuff, but I got to start somewhere. The shoulder strap goes over his left shoulder. The interesting thing about this is that the quiver points over his right shoulder (he's draws arrows with his right hand). Seems like it would be oh-so-easy to stick the quiver to the strap IF it were going to the right, but no such luck. Two more straps, one goes under each arm. A buckle, that I believe is purely decorative (I have never seen the straps unbuckle at that point), sits on the left side of his chest. You can clearly see this buckle shift all over the place throughout the course of FotR and TTT, so you know the straps allow for some movement. Picture 2 (note this is the Mirkwood quiver, but is about the same as the Lothlorien quiver) shows a rear (elf-buns alert!) view of how the quiver attaches to the straps. Picture 3 shows how the right side strap goes under his arm but curves back up towards the quiver.
This picture shows the repeating leaf pattern found on the quiver straps. This is the only picture I've found that makes the leaves appear in a different color from the rest of the strapping. The same pattern can be found on Leggy's belt.
The Lothlorien quiver in all its glorious detail. As far as I can see it, the bow sheath is the base of everything. Its not terribly noticeable because its a flappy piece of leather that doesn't look like much unless the bow is IN it (see third pic here). The quiver has little ties (picture 5) that affix it to the bow sheath, and the straps, once around Leggy's back, weave in and out of the bow sheath and wrap around the knife sheaths. The second picture here is a great illustration of that. Clarification: In past costuming posts, I always said "knife sheaths", so in case you've read those I should attempt to clear up that mistake. The actual knife sheaths are wood (obviously), and are not incased in any leather sheath that is part of the quiver (my previous idea). What I was actually looking at was the bow sheath. The wooden knife sheaths are held against that with the leather strapping that goes around Leggy and the quiver itself.
Like I said above, click on the pictures for further extrapolation and wild speculation about how this gorgeous bit o' leather is put together. If you have any comments, criticisms, better pictures, further insight, or just want to chat, please email me at cuprysa@yahoo.com. Also, if any links are dead, a heads up would be appreciated. A glass of wine helps immensely with sewing, but doesn't seem to do much for my web site construction techniques.
