The
Chicago Cubs is An MLB team placed in the Central Division
of the National League. The team was set up in 1870s as
White Stockings. The team has its roots in Chicago, Illinois
and has represented the same city in the major leagues
longer than any other club. Originally the Cubs were
organized to compete against the Cincinnati's Red Stockings
(White Stockings). The Great Chicago Fire that took place on
8th October 1871 virtually ruined the teams ballpark,
jerseys and records, but the team didnt lose its spirit and
completed its timetable of playoffs. Additionally the club
finished second in the National Association. Following the
achievement, the club remained inactive for two years due to
the fire devastation. In 1875, the Cubs were in the middle
of their second losing season after their comeback. The Cubs
in order to consolidate their line-up keeping in view their
successive failure acquired pitcher Al Spalding and first
baseman Cap Anson in 1876 from the Boston Red Stockings. Cap
Anson later became the team leader and manager for almost
twenty years. He is still remembered for his exceptionally
good playing and managerial skills. In 1876, William A.
Hulbert and pitcher/manager Al Spalding created a new
confederacy to substitute the National Association.
Infielder Adrian "Cap" Anson also proved to be very
promising and led the Cubs by outscoring their rivals by
more than five runs per game. Conversely Spalding declared
his withdrawal from the court in 1878 to concentrate on his
fledgling sports goods firm. In 1882, once again he joined
the club as clubs president. The new league touched the
apex of success in 1880. In the first decade of the 20th
century the Cubs became one of the premium team of the
professional baseball. They won 116 games in 1906, 107 games
in 1907, 99 games in 1908, and 104 games in 1909 and 1910.
In this decade infielders Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Harry
Steinfeldt and Frank Chance formed the core of the club. The
insolvency of the Federal League in the second decade of the
20th century was a massive blow for the Cubs. At that time
Charles Weegham took the hold of the team and took the club
to Weegham's ballpark which is todays Wrigley Field. On the
other hand Tinkers and Evers rivalry off the field was
getting fueled due to some or the other reason. In 1911,
Evers suffered a nervous breakdown which certainly marked
the end of his career and in 1913 Tinker went to Cincinnati
to administer the Reds. The Cubs are incidentally the most
unfortunate team since they havent won World Series since
1908. To add more to this they have not made a World Series
appearance since 1945. From 1947, they have either finished
in the second division or bottom half of the National
League. Regardless of this bad luck the Cubs are among the
Top 10 teams which are stable in the league in attendance. |
