Main Expertise:

Genetic engineering of microorganisms for the development of new antibiotics and antitumor drugs.

Generally, the microorganisms used for this purpose are bacteria of the Actinomycete group (genus Streptomyces and related) that produce compounds possessing antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Actinomycetes, and particularly streptomycetes, are the most versatile and commercially important producers of natural bioactive compounds (antibiotics, antiparasitic, antitumor, immunosuppressive, etc.). Recently, the advances made in understanding the genetics of microbial metabolism have opened excellent possibilities for the generation of new drug candidates by genetic engineering of microorganisms.
