An Author/Illustrator Visit to Van Buren Elementary School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Van Buren Elementary School

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
October 1999

My day at Van Buren Elementary School began with a juice and muffins/sweet bread. Grace Ferreter, the library media specialist was the hostess. She had helped the teachers and students get ready for my visit. I signed many books for those who had purchased books.

The students had spent a lot of time reading my books, learning about how I make the illustrations in my books, and doing some writing of their own. During each presentation I was able to create a chalk drawing for the school. A couple of classes had made their own versions of the Patchwork Farmer or his overalls.

Mrs. Hoefer's class had created a book Fall Sounds which they read to me.

Throughout the day I spoke to many large groups and was able to have a drawing session with a smaller group of budding artists. (The following three photos by Grace Ferreter.)
