A wordless tale about a farmer who tears his overalls, patches them, and then does it all over so often that he ends up with patchwork overalls that look very much like the patchwork fields of his farm.

• Introduce the concept of patchwork quilts, pillows, and so forth.
• Write the story that Brown's pictures tell.
• Brown has an unique technique (stippling) for creating illustrations. Note and discuss the techniques (wathercolors, collage, block prints, oil painting, and so forth) used to create illustrations in other favorite books.
• Discuss types of farmers: dairy, vegetable, grain farmers and so forth. Discuss the type of farmer "patchwork farmer" is -- justify your choice.
