| I bought my Centura in 1995 and am it's second owner. It was owned by an older gentleman who bought it new. Unfortunatly, like most Chryslers rust eventually starts to get into it but otherwise it was in relatively good condition and only had 85,000 Kms on it at the time. Over the years I have grown to like my Centura. Although initally bought as a cheap car to run between home and the office I enjoy driving it and so does my wife and daughter. The Centura has "quirky styling" which you either like or hate. Mine is a white KC 1977 model GL. It has mag wheels and tan upholstery and looks for it's age (I think) a design ahead of it's time. On the following pages you will find some technical information about the Centura which is derived from the workshop manuals which I was lucky enough to get with the car. You must drive a Centura to realy appreciate it's ageless qualities. At only 1253 Kg (2757 lbs) and with a high compression 6 cylinder 4.01 Litre Chrysler hemi engine the Centura goes like a rocket. But being only small and light, most of the weight is in the front which contributes to some rather unfriendly handling problems. The Centura does not have power steering, it is important therefore to keep good tyres on the front correctly inflated and make sure the steering alignment is exactly right or you will have to wrestle with the steering wheel and eventually the steering rack will suffer. Brakes are disk front, drum rear. Chrysler made an attempt to compensate the Centura's weird weight distribution by putting a variable hydraulic pressure limiting valve in the rear braking circuit. This device senses the cars attitude and reduces rear brake pressure if the front of the car dives, such as under hard braking, and therefore prevents the rear brakes from locking up. It is bolted to the rear of the chassis and connects to the rear axle through a series of springs and levers. Mine started to leak and like many other Centuras it was eventually bypassed. If you own a Centura I would like to hear from you. Please email me with questions and comments. I also need some parts for my car so let me know if you can help. Recent updates to the site feature the new owners photos page. Email me some photos of your centura for inclusion on this page. The message board is for you to share any Centura related matters with other owners and visitors, cars and parts for sale, wanted, technical issues, mechanical matters etc. |
