After lots of buying, selling and trading, Dads collection of Case and Silver King tractors grew from one in 1990 to twenty five in 2000. He never thought that the first one would ever lead to even a second one let alone twenty five. That first tractor fulfilled his dream of owning and restoring a tractor to bring alive the memories he had of his father Riley Conner who died at age 44 when Dad was just 8 years old while working on the family farm northwest of Cromwell Indiana in Noble Co.
About two years ago Dad decided that the time had come to start the process of selling his collection. Age and time has a way of making all of us slow down a little whether we want to or not. Of course it has been difficult to part with several of these tractors with so many miles traveled and lots of phone calls locating parts to restore these tractors to their original glory not to mention the hours and hours of work getting them back in running order.
So, over the past two years many of the tractors have been sold. Several have new homes not too far away while a couple of them have moved several states away. Either way, Dad has found piece in parting with them knowing that they are in the hands of others that appreciate them as much as he has.
He started this year (2007) with ten tractors still in his collection. A coupe of weeks ago a deal was made for eight more of them to join a couple that he had sold in 04 and 05 to a collector in Lapel Indiana. So now the collection is down to two. He has no plan as to how long these two will remain; he says he “just plays it by ear”. Hopefully his health will allow him the pleasure to keep these two around for several more years. Time will tell, but for now these two will have to keep each other company along of course with several stationary engines and Case garden tractors.
