Historic First Conference for Electronically Published Authors

Seventy members of EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection made history in both the electronic and publishing industries during the last weekend in August 2000. The first conference of electronically published authors took place, not on the West Coast or the East Coast as might be expected, but in Omaha, Nebraska. EPIC 2000: PAPYRUS, PAPER, PIXEL--BOOKS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM included e-publisher sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops, and keynote speeches by industry leaders.

E-books are published as computer downloads, diskettes or CD-ROM in formats that can be read in your word processing program, web browser, or other computer programs, as well as in formats for dedicated handheld reading devices or personal digital assistants. E-books written by EPIC members are usually available from small independent e-publishers who are leading the way in this new industry.

EPIC began in 1997 as an email list to discuss e-publishing. The group included both electronically published authors and print published authors interested in pursuing electronic publishing. The organization incorporated in August 1998 with fewer than 50 members. By the time the organization held its first conference, less than two years after incorporation, membership had grown to about 250 authors.

Forty e-authors joined together at the conference in a mass booksigning to introduce e-books to the public. Available books encompassed mainstream literature and every genre: horror, romance, humor, suspense, thriller, fantasy, science fiction, inspirational, and nonfiction, as well as books for children and young adults. Door prizes awarded to lucky guests included several gift baskets of electronic books and other goodies and a Rocket eBook, a handheld device for reading e-books.

At the gala awards banquet, EPIC honored industry pioneer Mary Z. Wolf, Hard Shell Word Factory publisher, with the Florence Moyer Service Award in recognition of her many contributions to e-publishing. The first EPPIE Awards were presented to winners in fifteen categories.   The prestigious EPPIE Contest is the first competition exclusively for electronically published books. The finalists and winners represent the finest fiction and nonfiction being published today in any format.

The next conference, to be held in the Seattle, Washington area in March 2002, will be open to the public, as well as to EPIC members.
