The 119th NY Field Music attempting to recreat the sights and sounds of
an
american civil war, regimental field music.
Each company in an infantry regiment was allotted one drummer and one
fifer.
A regiment at full strength with a full compliment of field musicians
would
have had 20 drummers and 20 fifers (this was seldom the case however).
The
orginal 119th NY had 18 musicians when it was formed. Its modern
incarnation
consists of eleven young men ranging in age from 9 to 38 years old.
Members
are instructed by the lead musicians Joe Korber, fifer and Jason
Maines,
drummer. The music plays numerous perfomances throughout Long Island
and
accompany Willis Company to Civil War living history events and
reenactments
thoughout the Eastern US, recreating the life of a regimental field
musician
as accurately as possible. We are always learning more and more using
that
knowledge to a create a more and more accurate impression. The Music's
goals
include , learning, teaching and having fun.
We learn authentic early american musical selections both martial and
popular
and practing these selections so that each performance the best it can
possibly be. Also we research and learn about the daily life and
routines of
an army field musician, we he did and what he played.
Teaching others about the music of the American Civil War and the role
of the
field musician in daily 19th century military life. We share what we
learn
with the public and each other.
Combining the afore mentioned two into a program that is rewarding and
fun
for all involved.
boy have we grown!
