| In November 1914 the South Carolina DAR recognized the plight of mountain children and voted to establish a school in a "remote area where the need is greatest." The present site at Tamassee was accepted in 1919. The South Carolina Daughters were soon joined in their effort by the National Society DAR, and together faced the obstacles of war, depression, and funding to serve America's children. Tamassee has grown to a campus encompassing more than 800 acres and thirty buildings. Children live on campus in cottages. Each cottage holds a maximum of twelve students plus one or two live-in teaching parents.
