The intention of this page is to provide information about the old style karate that I hold so dear.

Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura

This page is not for politics. I want to study and teach the best Shorin Ryu Matsumura Kenpo Karate that I can do. For many years I`ve searched for the most authentic Matsumura that I could find. My search led me to many of Hohan Sokens students, like Kuda, Kise, Arakaki, Coffman, Lange, and Rose. Some of these men I have actually trained with, others I have only spoken to over the phone or by mail/ or Email. THESE MEN ARE ALL GREAT MARTIAL ARTISTS and each one I spoke to was very kind and helpful. What I have learned from years of training and talking to these men, is that Soken sensei taught different people in different ways. I learned that Matsumura is a theory, a way of life and not a one size fits all system and it`s up to you to sort out the bull from the reality. If Someone is making claims, ask lots of questions, look closely at thier techniques, and in some cases their certificates, but most of all follow your heart. I have taken many years to look and listen, and have decided to continue in the original Shorin Ryu Matsumura Kenpo as taught by Yuichi Kuda Sensei. This is my choice, yours may be different, and thats OK.
If you are looking for affiliation these are the organizations I belong to: The Shorin Ryu Matsumura Kenpo Karate / Kobudo Federation, The Budo Ken Christian Martial Arts Association.

The following statement was recently released by Nishihira Sensei and the Suiken organization :"One of Soken's sons by his first wife had followed Soken Sensei back to Okinawa and had kept Soken Sensei's ashes.  When that son passed away earlier this year, Soken Sensei's ashes returned to Argentina as they were left in the care of the son's Argentinian wife and children in accordance with Okinawan custom.  Having Sensei's ashes in South America and his grave on Okinawa is fitting for a man with ties so deep in both places.  If one must pay one's respects to Soken Sensei, we ask that one do that at the grave and avoid causing the deep offense inherent in trying to make a Graceland-style visit to see his body."

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the death of Mr. and Mrs. Yuichi Kuda. Grand Master Kuda was a good man and a great martial artist in his own right. I had the good fortune of training under Mr. Kuda on Okinawa for three years from June 1984 to July 1987 and remained his student until his passing. He will be greatly missed.

Self defense as well as kata with bunkai are stressed.
