History of Kilts in Wales
Kilts have become popular with Welshmen in Wales, and in other places around the world, largely due to a resurgence in Welsh nationalism and a desire to connect with our Celtic roots. However, there has been some minor debate over the actual historical pedigree of the kilt in Wales. Some claim that there is evidence of kilts in Wales as far back as 2000 years. Still others claim that there is no historic evidence whatsoever of kilts in Wales. This web page does not attempt to settle the question, nor do I intend to re-write history.
Today, formal kilt regalia is immensely popular at Welsh weddings. Kilts are also popular with Welsh rugby supporters. Since launching this website I have received hundreds of inquiries from Welshmen all around the world who want to make a connection with their Celtic roots and show their Welsh pride.
What is a Welsh Kilt?
A Welsh kilt is any kilt with a Welsh tartan. It is manufactured and worn the same way as any other celtic kilt. Some Welsh tartans are further distinguished with a Dragon or St. David's emblem on the bottom right corner of the apron. The tradition of Welsh kilt wearing is really just getting started and today's kilt wearers will be creating the traditions that will endure for years to come.
