| I get a kick out of chickens. For years I have collected chicken items for my home and dreamed of owning my own small flock. Except for one brief (and disastrous ) crash course on having chickens when I lived in the boonies for a year I never had the opportunity - until I met and married my sweety in 99 and moved onto our beautiful property. Finding out about my dream, my husband and our best friends built me a "skookum" chicken house and our friends graciously donated my first small flock. They were older birds, chock full of personality and generally a friendly little bunch. I of course named them and got attached to them. My husband has commented that I have 7 more "pets". Which is quite true. Even though they no longer lay in the winter ( short of putting a jacuzzi in their coop I have tried everything to encourage them to lay in the cold weather but frankly they are old and set in their ways) but come spring I will have fresh eggs again , and hopefully I'll acquire a few more "pets" to replace the ones that have died from a combination of old age and lack of knowledge. ( the best teacher is experience) When I have acquired more experience I will add more of my own chicken information to the site. In the meantime I will mostly share what I have learned from others and also links where you can find information to help you in your quest for chickeness/t. |
