The national activist group, ADAPT fights for improved services, rights and legislation for people with disabilities.Since 1998, members of ADAPT's Chicago chapter have produced programs at CAN TV. They started with a live call-in show, then began a customized studio training course through CAN TV's Community Partners Project.
In 1999 ADAPT began running a regular series, Saturdays at 11:30 am on CAN TV19.
Recently, Alan Abarbanell began volunteering his services as a sign language interpreter, opening the series to deaf and hard of hearing viewers.
"We have people with disabilities that are watching. We want to get the message out to as many people as we can." says ADAPT member Gloria Nichols.
"Having a sign language interpreter is a good way to start doing that."
Abarbanell is on the staff at Access Living, a Center for Independent Living serving people with disabilities in the Chicago metropolitan area. But all his work on the show has been on a volunteer basis.
"Alan has been extremely accommodating." Nichols says. "Whatever we need, we just let him know."
