14/08/08: Finally, we managed to get two matches in over the weekend, with pretty good weather as well (though the pitches had been deadened by the last fortnight's rain).

On Saturday, a thrilling finish saw Chevening lose their game by 2 runs, having required four from the last ball to win. Good early bowling had reduced Woldingham to 25-5 but they clawed it back to reach 132 all out, and then bowled some very tight lines and lengths to restrict us to 130-8, despite the best efforts of Mark Burkitt, who scored 47.

On Sunday, Chevening pulled off a convincing win against a depleted St John's side (they had seven players). Despite the lack of fielders, Chevening's score of 201-8 was an excellent one; the pitch and outfield were both slow and most of the boundaries were long. David Franklin and George Fisk did the bulk of the damage, putting on 124 for the second wicket, before Fisk was bowled for a quickfire 73. Wickets then fell at regular intervals until veteran Roy Smithers came in to steady the ship, and he guided the team through to tea after Franklin had fallen for 86. One of the St John's bowlers ended up with figures of 6-96 from 18 overs.

In reply, the seam bowlers were having little joy due to the lifelessness of the pitch. In the end, all six wickets were taken with spin; the first went to James Clayton and the next five were shared between Smithers (3-10) and Franklin (2-7). The key wicket was an excellent catch from Will Fry in the deep, and Pete Rushbrook was cat-like behind the stumps on his birthday. St John's were eventually all-out for 76, giving Chevening the win by 125 runs.

11/09/08: With little to distract us in the way of actual cricket in the last couple of weeks, I've uploaded a spreadsheet with a summary of all results against all teams from the last six years. Wins are in green, defeats in red, draws in blue, abandonments in grey and the tie against North Downs in 2003 is in gold. This should come in useful for those "how do we normally do against that lot?" thoughts in the run-up to games.

A quick look will tell you that our only recent game against Woldingham was a 35-run loss last year, while our Sunday opponents St John's have beaten us twice in a row. We can, though, look back fondly on those two draws we managed against them in 2003 and 2004.

You could even delve further into the archives and find that the 2004 draw was the game up at Otford where we reached the formidable score of 18-7 before being saved by a late-order fightback, and that the 2003 draw was a mainly dull game enlivened by Chris Barrett diving head-first into the sightscreen.
