Smith Rock State Park
Smith Rock is one of the most under rated parks in the West! It never has had the big crowds like other state parks. Which is a good thing for everyone who comes to experience its amazing features. The rock is mostly Tuft, formed from volcanic ash. So its not as solid as granite and is still "young" comparatively speaking. The climbers like to call it rotten, because of the debris that exist on the less popular climbing routes.
A great day hike will take you past the some of the most popular climbs, morning glory wall area. The trail makes a couple mile loop past the South point and then past Monkey Face. Climbers can be seen all along the way. It is also a great place to view wildlife, as many birds and game rely on the Crooked River for there water supply. After Money Face the trail climbs to the top of the rock where the view is fantastic! The Cascades come into view to the west and the high desert plains to the east exude a feeling calm and peace as the vast expanse can easily captivate your gaze. This makes a terriffic location for lunch and don't forget the water. Its dry out there. The path down begins on the east side with a long stair system of switch backs. It brings you right into the red wall area and from there down to the bridge and back to the parking lot.
