The 1999 British Columbia Provincial Drug-Free Powerlifting Association meet was held on Sunday, January 31st at the Cheam Centre in Sardis B.C.
This was the first time in a couple of years that the B.C.'s had been put on and despite some previous injuries to a number of the participant the lifting was good and everyone had a great time. These provincials saw four new people joining the CDFPA along with a returning member who hadn't lifted with us for over five years. The BCDFPA is confident that with the new direction of the WDFPF and interest in drug-free power lifting, our numbers will increase.
This was the first lifting event for Nancy Carpenter in the BCDFPA and her first physical activity since suffering serious nerve damage to her neck and back six months ago. Nancy is a world class lifter who is will be slowly working on getting up the power lifting standards she has set in the past. Murray Cairns, otherwise known as "Moondog", continues his power lifting tradition of wrestling (with Extreme Championship Wrestling) and showing up to meets with a variety of injuries. We plan on isolating Murray from any cage matches there weeks before any power lifting contest because his potential to lift some big weight is tremendous. Mark Freedman's duties as a head referee and a couple of minor injuries brought his numbers down below what he has done in the past. Lifting with only a belt, he concentrated on his deadlift pulling a respectable 179.5 kg on his third try.
Roland Berg, lifting with some discomfort due to knee problems showed us why his bench press and deadlift are still to be reckoned with. It was great to see Roland back after a five year absence. Paul Wells, a newcomer to our federation and to power lifting had a bit of trouble with his bench press, but under the watchful eye of trainer Nancy Carpenter, will be a force to be reckoned with.
Robert O. Smith, who has competed in more contests than we care to remember (just kidding Robert) also had to do referee duties which shortened his warm-up time and using a full squat/deadlift suit. However even with this situation, Robert benched and dead lifted good weight, although quite below what he has shown us in the past, and what he will show us in the future.
Joel Thiessen, still a junior in the 125 kg class and still one of the most powerful lifters in B.C., competed head to head with Randall Rousseau a master in the same weight class. Although Randall came out a few pounds ahead of Joel, both agreed that their posted numbers are just a sample of what they will do this year as they are just beginning to train for competition.
All weights in the competition were in pounds but have been converted out into kg's.
