The music you heard as you entered is my transcription of Copland's arrangement of the Shaker melody "Simple Gifts". I wrote a transposition of the song to C minor followed by the original version in C major. I think the effect of going from the dark minor key to the bright major key is rather uplifting.

At Long Last!

My site  is now being updated for the first time in over a year. I have no doubt that everyone but me has forgotten about it. I just recently discovered that my internet security software is what was preventing me from loading Yahoo! PageBuilder and updating my site, although I have to admit that prior to that it was mostly due to procrastination.

Recapping the Past Year

So here's what happened in 2005. I've mostly just been living with my parents and helping out a little with the rebuilding of our house. I've spent a lot of time moping about what to do with my life and trying to push myself to make some progress on both the career front and the social front. I had one brief adventure when I decided to go live with my sister and her boyfriend in Bellingham. I was able to get a job at a publishing company where my sister once worked and I had a few people I already knew in Bellingham. Mostly I wanted to get some work experience (which I severely lack) and try living on my own without my parents (or a university) for a change. Being independant is not something that I am very comfortable with so this was a pretty big step for me. Unfortunately, my job was a seasonal one and I was one of the first people layed off (it wasn't my favorite job anyway). So, not being able to pay the rent anymore I decided to come back to Vashon and live with my parents again and help out on the house again. But I am at least doing one exciting thing which I will tell you about in this next section.

Music

Shortly before I graduated from PLU one of my profs got me connected with a friend of his who publishes educational music for high school and college choirs. He wanted to start selling original works suitable for beginner and intermediate singers and he asked me to compose for him. So that's how I got my first two "professional" compositions under contract. But my pieces still have yet to be published and I've discovered that my publisher is rather difficult to keep in touch with. My most recent composition for him has hit a roadblck because I have had some questions about his criteria which he said he would get back to me on and I haven't heard from him for a while.

So now I'm also exploring another avenue of music. I just completed the first core course of the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program and I plan to start the next course this January (if I can find the money.) The main thing I've learned from the course sofar is that Edison was right when he said success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. There is so much more to the business of film scoring than just the music. Maybe I'll go easy on myself and try video games for starters (although I've learned that video game composers earn zero royalties!).

Money!

Between my student loan, my class, and other expenses I almost out of money now and the pressure is on for me to finally get another job (something I fear tremendously). But I have an updated resume with my work experience from Bellingham so I guess it's just one of those times when I find out what I'm capable of.
My friend Joe has a website too. Check it out:
